The rule of twelfth's

Thanks everyone, I think :o

Is that it?

IS THAT IT!!!!!!!!

You come in here, causing a massive punch up, destroying the calm with your contentious post, and then just come back in at the end with a one liner!!?

I shall have to refer this to the Ethics and Standards Committee.

I do apologise, I hab a code add find de Seff coast stuff confussing :o
Think I understand the basic up and down stuff now though, thanks. So if I cast off at high tide and use the tide flow to help push me clear, and the passage time from mooring to open water takes three hours, this would explain the cork from bottle effect on reaching Boston Broad (I think) buoy, which marks the entrance to the approach to my mooring.
If I understand this sort of properly, if I'm on open water at high tide, with an intended passage plan taking me in a straight line from point 'A' to point 'B' and estimated at twelve hours crossing time, then ignoring any other factor, if I maintain course for the duration of the crossing, then any tidal flow affect will be cancelled out ?
Then if my passage plan is similar but only a six hour duration, then I need to adjust course to take into account the drift, which will be most at around three hours after high tide ?
Sorry if it sounds a bit thick to some :o

"Buck-Up" Dave
Fred Drift - Tide Drift its all the same :o

Dave this just proves you're winding us all up. I refuse to take the bait this time!:D

From which reply may I assume my post is remotely accurate ?
Assumption is a worrying game here. Promised a good mate a long time ago that the ECF would be troll free. Not broken that promise yet. But when I asked for opinion on a sailing issue shortly after, which to some, apparently, was a simple question, no straight answer was given because some assumed it was a troll. This is the same, and to some the answer is obvious. Not to me I'm afraid :(
If I've got it right I'm astonished, and no doubt young TommyRot will be too
After all, he understands my lack of knowledge more than some :o

Anyway, not feeling too good so best I bugger off now
G'night all

Grumpy git when feeling rough isn't I :o
Already sent an apology to Dick so another one due to anyone offended by the grumpiness last night, think I've got my head around it now too, helped by an e.mail from a Yacht Master instructor who wishes to remain anonymouse :D
Thanks all, and normal service will be resumed shortly

I didn't know anyone still worked out tides. Even my ancient B&W plotter gives tidal curves "accurate" to a tiny amount. The sea occasionally obliges by rising or falling the correct amount.

You have a plotter ?
Sheer luxury :p
Now when I were a lad ... :D

Seriously, mine was found to be lacking in one very important detail, it doesn't work :o
Still with GuapaSan until collected, then maybe I can fix it, maybe not, but until I know which it is, can't go splashing out on a new one just yet :)

Inlaws were confused with my pleasure at getting a tide clock for Xmas, they couldn't work out why it only has one main hand and doesn't tell the time :D

If it hasn't been mentioned instead of twelths I have used %s as follows.
1st hour 10% of range
2nd hour 15% of range
3rd hour 25% of range
4th hour 25% of range
5th hour 15% of range
6th hour 10% of range
This is much easier to work out than twelths and as an an approximation does the job.

Ah, metric eh?

More of an Imperial sort of bloke, me.
