Re: How we got here

Hm we seem to be mixing parliament and monarchy here. Monarchy by definition is unelected so basically might is right and provided you've got enough brass neck or archers the other guy is toast. Then you raise taxes and die due to a surfeit of lampreys.
What we've got is both, which is confusing at best. After 300 years we still haven't worked out what's what, or er who's who. Its like paying twice at the restaurant and then doing a runner.

[ QUOTE ]
I look at the americans and see

1 a written constitution (mainly by expatriate Scots who saw the flaws in the UK)
2 Every American is very patriotic . Flags on every door way
3 Making a big way in the world.

1/ A written constitution that encourages them to go out and kill each other with lethal weapons in pursuit of freedom . . . which means schools have metal detectors and armed guards and we still get massacres. Great.

2/ 'Flags on every doorway' - now where have I seen that? Oh yes, Belfast . . .

3/ Making a big mess in the world is surely more accurate.

King Charles and Queen Camilla / President Blair and First Lady Cherie

Very easy choice, thanks.

Charles may be a prat but he is not a crook.

Camilla may not be terribly exciting but she is not a crook.

inherent problem with democracy

ah yes - the crokkedness arises from the need to hang on to power. Whereas it seem charles is rather tired of too much responsibility. I'm wary, cos i live in a modern building...

Re: south african

It's an idea. But most of the seth efricans in London are in regent's park zoo, and i don't see how the crown would fit onnem if it wasd going to be one of the boring goat things with crap antlers. Any other suggestions?

I would say something but I have just sworn allegiance. Mind I dont believe it was to Charles or does he count. Beeing a subject now do I have to be loyal to the extended family.

i have to say that if and when bigears becomes king i will find the national anthem even less relevant or acceptable. about time we had something that was about the country rather than one individual.

but wait - here you are, having presumably chosen to take UK citizenship when so many posters are moaning about wanting to leave the country because it's all so terrible here. why did you do it?

This is true. I still havent applied for a passport yet. Still travel on my SA one I have a permanent shengen visa because I work for a Dutch firm and need it to do business in Holland.
Pain in the ass coming back into England though. My wife goes through the european que and allways has to wait for me. It does give her a chance to get the luggage though.

Nothing against the Swedes, sure they would do an admirable job.

Its just that I felt that the Dutch have a more developed sense of humour.

And whoever gets the job will certainly need that.

Re: No Problem

I suspect the oath you swore was to "her heirs and successors"

So your allegiance will be to successor rather than heir

Easy Peasy
