Committee boat ? or are you intending on bouncing around for the hell of it ?

I was a very keen sailor, hardly missing a race weekend including the winter series, it was during my committee boat/rescue duties that introduced me to speed/power and I never really looked back, converted after one weekend and 1oo L of petrol :cool:.

For the hell of it. Went back to sailing from motor when my daughter was little and petrol prices got silly. Taken the sailing boat out for the whole winter to do some jobs this year for the first time ever, so buying a rib to get back on the water until the spring and probably use it for a bit of work in the summer.

Fascinatingly anal, prohibitive notices everywhere, right up there with the unwritten one about not wearing your hat at the bar of the Island SC that no one tells you about until the barman has ignored you for 20mins!:D

Makes you wonder about Golfers IQ?:eek:

Don't worry, DAKA, I couldn't afford to golf, offshore racing is much cheaper!:rolleyes:

I think you might have got the wrong end of the stick, this thread is about the raggie motto " power gives way to sail " and nothing at all to do with colregs .

This thread is just a play ground for trolls (nice to see that you have joined in) ;)its to be treated as a game.

I havent read anything on this thread to indicate that anyone doesnt take the actual colregs seriously but obviously not take the raggies motto seriously.

There's nothing wrong with it, and it's as relevant today as it ever was.

It's all about ability to manoeuvre.

Mobo man sitting on the flybridge of his stinkpot can stop, go backwards, left, right at the push of a lever or the turn of a wheel. A raggie has ropes and flappy things that take time, and often crew to sort out should a change of direction be required.

It makes perfect sense that power gives way to sail, unless the powered vessel is even more constrained in its ability to manoeuvre. (no brakes, fishing, in a narrow channel)

You'll notice I've used terms that the average Mobo driver will understand, (left, right, brakes, wheel etc.) :D

Is this meant to be one of those ironic posts :D

If not I think you need to re read the thread or at least clarify if you are talking about I.R.P.C.S (colregs) or the raggies motto 'power gives way to sail' which is inaccurate and shouldnt be confused as the same :)
 
The whole thing is a bit of a dinosaur, and the wind driven crowd have inherited it from vessels who actually deserved it. It originated when steam vessels first started plying the same crowded waters as sailing cargo vessels, and they were GENUINELY difficult to manouver. It really has no place today, but is rather hard to simply remove. There is absolutely no (sensible)justification these days for a small plastic vessel which has the ability to use both power and wind for propulsion to demand "right of way" over another.

I'm in the privileged position of sitting in both camps, as well as having something rather larger to play with professionally, and the Steam gives way to Sail situation has been a source of constant amusement for me over the years. Many is the time I've seen someone at the helm - usually around the UK, stare fixedly ahead and force me to take avoiding action in the Dover or Channel TSS, while they revel in their misplaced and mistaken sense of power like a janitor with the toilet keys.

Not a lot can be done about it - except perhaps mandatory registration and education. Can't see that happening - infringement of personal liberty.....

That's the thing the average mobo forgets, most raggies spend some of their time as mobos - usually the difficult bits either end of a trip as well. I doubt that many mobos have as many hours under sail as the average raggie does under power...:)

OK I'll try and put it another way....

There was a moboater from Poole,

The Mobo was sold with remorse,
