We hear about the costs, what about the savings. A fifty foot boat with the internal space of a sixty footer is a huge saving in costs, both purchase and ongoing.
A 50 foot boat on V drives is just as space saving and a lot simpler. Re handling; you can get integrated joysticks to control all engines and thrusters. We hear about the costs, what about the savings. Yes, I kind of agree but its complexity / "reputation" put me off (but I then bought a joystick-equipped sterndrive boat so who am I to talk...).I've watched a video which explained and showed really well how to joystick steer in any direction.
I'm impressed. Might take a while to master? But what a great idea.

Do you need 1st hand ?
4 examples when I was in La Nap .
All friends to the extent of socialising , mob numbers , cruising in Co , anchoring up near , booking restaurant tables , etc etc .
Age span from brand new Azimut , new S/Sker , 5 y Sessa , 10 y S/ Skr .
Two of the above meet up in the U.K. for restaurants as well .
How well we know them let others judge ?
Felt the odd one out @ dinner as no issues to discuss..
Hope that adds some qualifications to my knowledge of IPS for potential newbies making decisions .
She knows. There’s one on the island that I pay homage to every time I go there. Also, at boat shows the Absolute ladies are the nicest there. The reality is that my other half is rapidly going off boating ?I know why youre suddenly a paid up member of the IPS fan club. You are lusting after an Absolute Navetta arent you? I can see straight through you. Can I be a fly in the wall when you tell F please![]()
But its going to cost more. The selling point for boat builders is that the smaller IPS engines + drives cost less to buy and install than the equivalent larger engined shaftdrive system with V drive boxes. And there's more flexibility on the positioning of the IPS engines if jack shafts are used
Jon Mendez, the best boat driver I have ever metI've watched a video which explained and showed really well how to joystick steer in any direction.

For those that have it new then why not?
As mentioned earlier though, much further down the line, age, for those on a budget it could be a scary proposition ?
The selling point isn’t the extra bedroom. It’s ease of use. The market is not someone who’s worked his way up from small boats over the years, it’s a big boat as a first boat. Also the wives, truly how many wives actually park their boats?
It’s true but it’s like buying an electric car, there are plenty out there but your mind instantly thinks Tesla. If you want joystick control you think Volvo IPS, it’s brand recognitionIs it? As kashurst pointed out you can get joystick control for any drive system these days so IPS dont have that advantage any more although the IPS joystick control is very good
Well I did, then I tried one (several times) and hated it, and bought an iPace...It’s true but it’s like buying an electric car, there are plenty out there but your mind instantly thinks Tesla. If you want joystick control you think Volvo IPS, it’s brand recognition
True, IPS and presumably all other joystick systems have improved a lot since IPS launched in 2005 (ish) too.Is it? As kashurst pointed out you can get joystick control for any drive system these days so IPS dont have that advantage any more although the IPS joystick control is very good
When the joystick is active the throttles and wheel are inactive. So doesn't seem likely unless it's failed....
I've seen a fair few times a motorboat getting into a tighter and tighter situation and with that can come panic, and even more increasing thrust until the boat is leaping up and down with each blast of the engines ,usually ending in a crunch.
For fireflys case to happen it would seem like they must have been using handfuls of throttle with the joystick?

Yes and it´s one of the most exciting questions if you want to upgrade in the 50 ft range. It´s really hard to find an new ish boat of the leading brands like F,S and P...without pods...this debate comes up time and time again
my point of reference. How many issues FIRST HAND do we get on here. Answer. Not many.
