We have had another incident, this time near Porto.

Scuttlebutt have picked up on the story:

VIDEO: Attack by orcas along Portugal >> Scuttlebutt Sailing News

Pete
Thanks for the video it helps determine what is happening, by the size and the way they are interacting with each other and the boat, they are juveniles, and are extremely curious and inquisitive, the fact they go near the rudder is the question that needs answered.
Did you move the rudder when they were around I e autopilot, hand steering, as the movement under the water might be attracting them out of curiosity

Not really, why the rogues haven’t been shot is the question. Their motivation isn’t very interesting.

And what starts as an interested orca enthusiast turns into a blood bath of killing.
The Orcas are protected by law, they have not killed anyone nor seriously injured, personnel property has been damaged, in a Collison this is a civil matter and I am sure if you take it up with the relevant authorities in Portugal and Spain you might get somewhere, , probably shown out of the court room ;)

There is footage of them biting the tail/flipper of a whale somewhere to disable it, this could be play fighting like big cats practising biting the underside of each other's necks. The tables have turned they are controlling our behaviour briefly... can,t believe they still have places like Seaworld open. Making animals to perform in captivity is sickening... circuses are slowly disappearing thankfully...

They attack until the boat becomes unresponsive and then move on. It's not curiosity, it's killing for fun/practice as the boats are not food but the Orca still attack until the boat is unresponsive (dead).

I never knew an inanimate object was alive,
That poor piece of fiberglass, I will say a prayer for it tonight..
I hope it finds peace or its other piece :ROFLMAO:
Well I though it was funny

So, if as the thread title says, they are heading South, does this tie in with the normal migration patterns of the species or is it a departure from the norm.
FG, as our resident orca man, do you know what happens after the orcas have followed the fish north, how do they normally get south again? By what route and at what time of year?
This information could be important to our sailing plans if the orca's games continue or even increase in future years,

Resident orca pods have large ranges, the whole coast from Gibraltar to coruna will be the feeding grounds, they are feeding mainly on the tuna , so it will depend on were the tuna is .these dolphins are not prone to temp water change, hence found all over the oceans.
The advice is to shut down the engine and stay away , if they come to the boat perhaps heave too. Drop sails, hold rudder in one position, they are more interested in a moving object
If sitting in the water bobbing about they perhaps will get board.
See the video of a french man interview on the other thread , this is what he done and did not have an encounter.

I was reminded of Boudicca's chariot and the scythes that she added to the axles.

Perhaps steel knives attached to the rudder and skeg will make the point, and word will get round the rest of the killer whale groups that boats bite.

Then you would be breaking another sovereign states laws .
Which is not recommended.
One should always follow out of respect the laws of other nations as we visit or pass through.
