The Nichts

Not until tomorrow l thought.
Yes, the longest night this year is the night between 21st and 22nd December. The solstice occurs on the 21st at 15:03 GMT. The earliest sunset of the year in the UK was about 10 days ago, and in some parts of the northern hemisphere even occurred on the 24th November, for example Honolulu. The latest sunrise in the UK is near the end of December, about the 30th.

When I Googled that quote the result added "longest day". Given Brazil is equatorial or southern hemisphere, and Scotland is not, what sense is it supposed to make?
There is a map showing the day/night boundary slanting across the globe. Come to think of it, it must be in mid-summer when it stays light long into the evening up there.

How are you surviving with all that heat and sunlight and absence of penguins? It must be murder for you.
Well, penguins COULD be possible - they have them in the Galapagos Islands, which are also tropical. But It is somewhat warm - around 23°C at the moment. It may drop to 10°C in January! The locals think this is cold weather...

We have penguins, they live on an island 365 (when not feeding) just north of Sydney (34 deg South). Its nearing the 'middle' of summer the (Tasman) sea temperture is around 23/24 degrees (warmed by the East Australian Current that flows from the tropics - and speeds the yachts on the Sydney/Hobart race). Its been hot here 30 degrees, on the coast, and closing 40 inland (but you will all know about the heat here as you will have been watching the cricket). Cape Capricorn is about 1,000km north of Sydney
