There ws the odd one over the last 5yrs or so - but now despite the near bankruptcy of the country - more Jetski's are appearing on the river ....

The river has been quiet, pleasant ... people in smll dinghys fishing ... people swimming .... life went on without hassle.

Now we have the curse of Jetski's towing infalatbles with screaming kids .... carving up the water .... making hell for those who have been quietly fishing from dinghys ... swimmers at risk ...

I was cutting grass near the river - before laying out timber to gauge the length etc of the bank decking I will construct in my channel ..

Jetski from next door's son making an unholy nuisance of himself - yesterday and today - fisherman in dinghys have shouted at him .. but he ignores completely - thinks its hilarious fun.

I don't ike spoiling peoples fun - but it may come to talking to boss of the Borderguards / River Police ... there is an 8kt speed limit / low wash rule.

I admit that on 'quiet - empty' stretches of the river - I have opened up the motor baot I have - but like most planing hulls - it creates less wash at high speed than it does at lower....

Just thee lack of consideration for others and more money for kids toys

A sign of the times I think but as we all get older, we wish for less hassle and less noise

I was in curacao last year. The jetskis there were lit up like xmas trees, full nav lights and underwater lights which illuminated the roost. Looked quite amazing. Many had amazing sound systems but the main thing i noticed was how quiet they all were compared to the ones here ?

In warmer climes efoils might displace jetskis, which would be a big improvement. Unfortunately they require a degree of skill to operate, so they probably won't appeal to a good chunk of the jet set.

We’ll have someone coming along soon to tell us that everyone has the right to use the water as they please and everyone should make allowances. Why is it always me that is supposed to be making these allowances?
I hate jet skis as much as the next guy...but I hate fishermen worse....and as the crux of the OP’s report seems to be about making the river safe for fishermen...I’m torn🤷‍♂️🤔

Bane of our cruising life here, fishers. 2,4,6 rods resting on their stands, nobody around to tend them, blending in to the shadows of the reeds at the sides of the canals, you are upon them before you can take evasive action, though the fishers should remove rod and line from the water before the boat passes - it's in the by-laws for the canals here - one cannot avoid all of them and I'm sure I have line around my starboard propellor.

The sound of screaming reels as the line is paid out from an un-attended rod, shortly followed by the scream of the irate fisher that has to put down his Game-Boy he was playing with in his car away from the canal bank...

if Jet Skis get really popular in the area hopefully Authorities will designate an area where they can zap about to their heart's content, then everyone will be happy.
We have designated areas for speed boats, water ski, and jet ski users, however they don't seem to like it when a 10 tonne semi displacement 37ft cruiser exercises the throttles when encountering the lifting of the speed limit... If I give the boat it's head I would swamp the tow paths on either side of the canals here with the wash 😇 😏

We are not talking about commercial fishermen ... I'm talking about a guy sitting in a small dinghy with rod and line enjoying a day on the water ...

He does no harm to anyone ... but along comes a Jetski and suddenly this guy is clinging to the gunwhales hoping he doesn't get tossed into the water.

Yesterdays 'shout' at the Jetski - was an older man and what looked like his elderly wife in a small dinghy ... they quietly rowed past my swim pontoon .. the Jetski passed close at high speed .. causing the dinghy to rock violently ...

The river :

Approx 1km downriver from me is an area that is divided into two .... municipal launch slipways and pontoons ... provided for boats / fishing etc. Next to it - is a designated swimming area with yellow marker buoys indicating the limits for swimmers and boats ... to avoid conflict.
Sadly both 'parties' tend to ignore the marker buoys. Many times I have been proceding downriver in my boat and luckily noted a head in the water OUTSIDE of the large swimming area ... they fail to realise that they are very hard to see in the water if there is any surface action. The other - you guessed it - Jetski's can be seen occasionally being stupid INSIDE the swimming buoy area ...

The river I live next to - is a well known and promoted Fishing venue ... it attracts not only loocals but also Angling Tourists ... for its wide ranging fish species ....

Its funny actually .... my 25ft Motor Sailer with its 47HP Perkins can create the biggest waves ever if I give her the gun .... 9kts is easy and with that deep belly hull and full moulded bilge keels - she is using all her displacement hull to create those waves !
She can put big MoBo's waves to shame !!

Does a rational ,sensible person with feelings for other people uses jet ski…….no!

First it is NOT the jetski that is the problem. They are just used by poor people who cannot afford to put 40ft MOBOS in marinas, make loud music partying at night, then roar up the river at 10 kts causing far more wash in one go than a jetski does in a day. In fact a RIB doing 6kts can be pretty unnerving
At st Lawrence bat we have 2 clubs. Our sailing club and a waytersports & ski club. The two live side by side with little problem. The watersports club is well aware of the problem of noise & make every effort to keep their jetski users clear of the main public shore and our kids sailing areas. They have a race circuit marked out & it is clear of our sailing area- which takes more than our fairshare of the waters.
We acknowledge the right of them to use the river & they do so with consideration. Personally I have found that since unregulated users -Speedboats as well as jetskis- have been stopped from accessing the river at Stone there has been no problem of which I have been aware . I live just 300M from the river
We get more hassle from fishing boats, visiting yachts & old gaffers sailing through the moorings than anything else

When the rods stretch from one side of the canal to the other, yes we do mind if they are un-attended, that covers about 60% of the fishing here. At least jetskis are only allowed in certain sections and none are that close to where we are.
Fishing is forbidden within the "No Wash" limits of our marina and it is strictly enforced by our harbour master, fishers were trying to cast their lines between the boats from the other side of the canal.

Mind you we have some giant sized Carp swimming in the canal and they are dwarfed by the catfish which are huge especially at Maasmechlen, the wild carp at the Herentals marina are about 1.5m in length and they are safe there as there is no fishing allowed there either.

I agree that such fishermen as you quote are a pain and should be sorted.

But my posts are about a river that is wide / deep and unlike a canal.

Regarding Catfish ... one day I noticed three boats together straight out from my channel .. about 100m ... they were shouting and lot of movement going on .....
Later I found out that a guy on one boat had hooked into a Catfish in the deep hole out there ... it took the three boats to get it out of the water ..... 25KG !!
Few months later another catfish was caught near same spot ... 12KG.

We have some big Pike and Carp in the river ... Pike is popular fished for ... as well as Perch.

Obviously your area have come to agreements and compromise - fine ... applauded.

But you are well aware that many areas have had their share of trouble with idiots on Jetski's ... Sppedboats ... leading to authorities designating areas.

When my 25 was in Solent ... we were approaching Cowes and dropping sails .... a bunch of Jetski's came out from Cowes and started cavorting around ... one cut away and did a high speed cutting turn close to us and he misjudged .. he actually glanced off the side of our boat .. causing a deluge of water over the cabin top and wife who was handing the mainsail .... the Jetski's wash caused us to heel over and wife was hanging onto the boom as it swung out and back.
Guy on the Jetski could be seen laughing his head off ...
As they went across the Solent towards mainland - they were playing similar games with other boats ...

I called CG and described the Jetskji ... which further boats also added their VHF c alls to CG ... I was not only one who offered to prosecute if needed.

We heard that when they arrived at mainland - Police were waiting for them. But what happened after - we did not hear about.
