The ideal dinghy painter is......

made of rope

that floats

has a bit of stretch

feels nice in the hand

and is available at.....

url appreciated

Polyprop, if it is to float, although its not stretchy

(nylon is stretchy but does not float)

soft multiplait construction and a matt finish to be nice to handle.

THIS IS IT
(flash makes it look shiny but it's not)

Bought a length (end of reel I suspect at boat show) used as painter for many years (but now replaced by something not so nice ... and bright yellow! ) a couple of metres for practising knots (thats thsi piece) and a few short bits for misc lashings.

Dunno where to get it now ...... but it really ticks all the boxes except for stretch

won't that make a floating line sink?

Might do, you can get various sizes. I don't use a floating line since I haven't found a black coloured one...that orange would look awful on my set up. The snubber is essential though, both for towing and when alongside .... Powerboat wash, remember? :) S.

Any body who uses black rope as yachting rope, for any purpose, must be " a good fe w metres short of a full coil"

The correct dinghy painter is the bit of line that you've found in the locker which serves no other useful purpose at this moment in time so you can tie it to your dinghy ...

If you're taking it into a marina then tie it tight off the stern - no lines to worry about then ... if you're reversing into a berth then put it off the bow instead ... or put a crew in it to row it to the right place ... ;)
