Looking at the Garmin NavTalk GSM/GPS Has anyone got one? Are they any good for GPS, texting and making calls. Basically at £500 are they worth it? Can you put a Pay as you go SIM in them?

Ask happyone, he's been talking/raving about them! Me? I don't think they are worth 50p.

Seems expensive to me. You could get quality separate hand-held GPS and GSM phone for well under £500. You're paying for the novelty. And don't forget, if you lose it or it breaks, you've lost your GPS AND your tellingbone!

I agree with you, in which case any suggestions for an OAP phone - see I was thinking about getting the Garmin for my Dad, i work in a chandlery so get a bit off of that £500. He's having probs with his mob coz his eyes are failing him (nothing to do with his age of course). He keeps moaning at all the other functions that the phone does - all he wants to do is text and call, the other functions being there confuse him (nothing to do with his age of course). Thought the GPS phone might be an option and the GPS a bonus?

Hi Suzanne. I looked at that phone but I do think that it is a bit of a gimmick. I have decided that there are too many companies trying to get involved in too many markets and trying to put them all in one. I for one change my mobile phone twice a year as it just wears out, so I don't want to have anything e.g an expensive GPS system that would have to be thrown away with the phone. There are a good selection of little GPS's about if you wanted to get him one of those, as the for the phone I would concentrate on something simple and easy to use.

One of the benefits of the GPS phone is being able to send your location to another user, but they need to have the same phone to receive it. It would be cheaper to just text your position from your handheld GPS via your simple phone /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Bloody hell, Pete. Wadda'ya do to wear out a mobile phone in six months? I've got an up-to date Bluetooth, infra-red, sing you a song mobile phone (of course) but I've also got the first mobile I ever had. Circa 1894 (sorry 1984). As big as a brick-build privie. And it still works!!! Trouble is, I ain't got the strength now to lift it!!!

I'm afraid that it is wear and tear, mine are usually with built in PDA's. I have the P800 which I have used for about 2 months now, but will be getting the new colour blackberry on Wednesday as it is a bit sleeket. The P800 is a bit like a brick, but it worked last night in the skittle alley /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif Perhaps some of the others who saw it could give their opinion, but I don't need the camera in it, the games consul thing or the MP3 player. When on standby the thing keeps lighting up as soon as anything touches the large screen, so it gets annoying when in a shirt pocket or whatever. The blackberry has wap capability but not web access, I still have to suss that one out, but I don't want to keep booting up my laptop to get web access. It may mean that I am not able to post in the day on here when I am out and about if I can't sort it /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
