The Forum Burgee.

Like someone else said, think it looks a bit 90's and looks very similar to the clip art used here http://news.calderdale.gov.uk/tour-wi-fi-wheels-into-action/

Mouse is a club design, this feels like a corporate advert, might even fall foul of my port authority's rules on advertising, I would have to check. I know you do some freelance work for them, and probably want them noticed a bit more in the design, but think I prefer the club feel.

My intentions weren't to promote them commercially but to promote the forum, ie. us as a group and at the same time link us all together. The occasional magazine piece has no bearing on this.

Don't worry, I shall come us with some more design ideas. Upmarket, clean, stylised. I would still like to see ybw on there. What do people think about having ybw in the design? Would you rather it be letter free ?

Henry :)

Just checked the bylaws here, looks like it would be classed as advertising by my port authority and I would need written permission from them to fly it.

I also welcome an alternative and give top marks to Henry for putting his neck on the line in a very democratic spirit.

Politics aside, for some reason I liked the positioning of the globe and the ribbon in the first one more :)

I'm not yet entirely sure about the alternative, but the blue background works better for me. My suggestion would be to leave the 'www' out and replace it with ybw.com which is a more frequently used way of referring to url's.

henryf. Sorry the first & 2nd are 'naff' tbh.

How about?????? Original design of mouse & glass but the whole thing a bit bigger. The 'olive' in the glass to be a 'map of the world' although small I'm sure it could be done. As was said before ditch the www, not necessary & up the stem of the glass ybw.com.
Please don't go for the nylon printed burgees. Cheap & tacky. The originals with heavy cotton, embroidery & double sided were a classy burgee. However the cotton did fade fairly rapidly so perhaps some attention to UV resistant fabric wouldn't go amiss.

If you're going to have a "non-rolled-up-trouser-leg" version, then I think it should have the letters YBW on it. I don't think that adding other URL-type adornments (www or .com) to those letters really works, unless you go the whole hog and have www.ybw.com/forums, which would work ok on a window sticker but not as a burgee.

Good luck with that one, but I'll be sticking with the Tipsy Mouse. I can't see the point of a second "more direct" design - unless it's literally a printed note saying "I like to spend time on some boating forums at YBW.com" then people are still going to need to ask what it means.

Ten out of ten for taking this on Henry :)

The new design is not my cup of tea but then I am in the keep the old one camp and will go for that when it is available. Cheers :)

I would prefer it to be letter free, for me an ensign should be easily recognised by people that know it and cause those not in the know to be curious and find out more. You're a brave man for doing this and it's much appreciated. ......though at the moment I favour the mouse.

Whilst I appreciate the sentiment behind the idea Henry, I have to admit, those are my thoughts. I too am in the 'keep the mouse' corner. Don't really get why there's a need for a new one to go alongside it tbh. It does the job in a simple but effective way so, if it ain't broke...etc etc. Better to make the existing one more readily available no?

Exactly what was going through my mind too when I was commissioning the current version. Hence not considering for a moment anything but the mouse, but making the design a little larger and bolder so that it could be spotted more easily by those in the know.

Hi there. At the risk of repeating myself we are going to be making the mouse design more readily available. The discussion is purely around an alternative design to run alongside it. The mouse design can't be changed.

I want to investigate an alternative unconnected design. The secondary design isn't going to inhibit sales of the mouse design.

Henry :)

:D I thought I read this carefully but missed this bit. Thanks for repeating it! :D

Thought the vote was not to have an alternative alongside it?

I think we should only have one, having two is divisive, and I expect will cause confusion by there being two.

I understand that Mr F, I just don't get the need to have two in production representing the same forum. Imo, better to have just one.

I also prefer the original design as in mouse and glass but do feel it could possibly be improved to aid recognition.

What about having the mouse and the glass as original balancing on YBW in either white or pale blue? might please some from each camp but obviously will never please all.

This has become a real can of eels!

After giving this some careful thought, here is my conclusion:

If there's a new design then it needs to be all encompassing, so starting with tradition I think we need the mouse and the glass, then add a sail, pair of oars and a prop for starters... Then of course the whole internet thing, so add a globe and some form of YBW ident so folk make the association. Mice are very 80's/90's, so a smart-phone, tablet and laptop - oh and a watch. Then there's the whole compatibility thing, so a Windows 'flag', an Apple, an Android and a Penguin (who of course wants to be South of the globe not in the middle or up top!). Moving on, we come to the social aspect and the cocktail glass may be perceived as a bit 'toff'/socially biased for a few of the lounge lizards, so we should add a beer mug (and a carton of orange juice for the non-drinkers). Finally, there's the colour - I think for neutrality we have to mix all the colours of the palette so no niche group/political leaning is offended - thus Brown is the optimal colour! For simplicity and cost cutting purposes, we could make all the graphics the same colour and this would also cover the advertising angle... Thus the new forum burgee should be - A plain brown triangle!!! :p
