Hi all,

Since I first started sailing, I had always dreamt of doing something 100% mad on my boat, something to get me noticed, something which will be remembered and something that I can raise money, alot of money, for a good cause.

My first question is what?

Everything has been discovered or has been done before.

Can u think of anything which will get the attraction of the "man in the street"?
To reach the media with massive impact?
How can this be done? What Should i do?

Any ideas???? And i mean any.

I am thinking and thinking hard, but what could i do???

Woody

I too have a dream. Its been done before many times but not by me and thats what counts . Sail around England (maybe single handed).

I have crossed the channel several times s/h and been to st Catherines ( london) s/h Rye, Ramsgate and Dover s/h from a south coast port .
Don't dream it .. Do it .. I WILL realise MY dream some day.

You don't say how long you have been sailing or what type/size of vessel you own.

My last crossing of the channel was meant to be in a forecast of 15-18 knots. it was about 30 kn . when i looked at my chartplotter it gave an eta of 4 hours. I thought oh s**t . Too much sail aloft . about an hour later it said 3 hours , my thought then was oh well only 3 to go. Did monumental changes to my confidence .
This is why I feel confident to take on such a trip as around england . (caledonian cannal included)

My advise to you is .. its all been done before! Do it for yourself not the press. If you can help a worthy cause then thats good

Re: Nuffin against dreams

BUT the Caledonian canal is in Scotland.. You cannot sail round England as it's northern border is a land border..

But you can go via Edinburgh and Glasgow now and Ohdrat is still right, it's land border no matter how much you drift.

The North coast of Scotland is only about 80 miles long, with a good passage anchorage in the middle and good harbours at each end - it's a doddle. I don't consider that you have circumnavigated the UK if you use the canal. If you are going to do it, do it properly. And don't call Scotland England while in Scottish waters - you'll upset the residents.

As for you, Woody - you'll have to do a lot more than that if you want to get any attention . . . a non-stop circumnavigation via the NE and NW passages is about the only thing I can think of - or maybe furthest North. There was clear water at the pole a couple of years ago.

Re: Nuffin against dreams

North coast is actually OK if you get the right weather and do it from West to East.. You can stop prior to rounding Cape Wrath at Kinlochbervie.. would advise heading for Orkney once round Cape Wrath.. need to keep well out anyway due to firing range.. small boats can do it.. Orkney is something that shouldn't be missed so rather than head for Scrabster (Thurso) go thro Eynhallow Sound (which has a handy lighthouse at Brough Head to mark it's entrance and then into Kirkwall (v yacht friendly with hospitable yacht club and generally excellent vibes) or Hoy Sound (say Hi to the Old Man) and into Stromness..

This way you avoid the Pentland (which on a good day is fun and gives us little boats the chance to sail at unheard of speeds with the tide!) and get to see the Orkneys..

Done a bit of mad sailing to raise money(several K) for BHF & mc millian nursing.Left the car at home and sailed 25miles each way to work for a week .Plenty of support from local press etc lots of freebees IE free berth at marina . Few years later sailed around the sailing club dinghy course non stop for 48 hours-----(Slightly different to what you intend to do and dont sound much but you try it . The sailing around the dinghy course in a heavy wooden cruising boat was the worst. ). Not great ocean voyages but the point I'm making is if your sponsors can see that you doing something they are more likely to follow your progress and the more dosh you will raise.

It depends really if your quest is to raise money ,become a sailing hero or sail oceans. If its to raise money then stay local cos if you sail over the horizon you will be quickly be forgotten and no one will give a toss .

Go for what ever you choose and enjoy !!

Easy. Sail around Britain standing on the spreaders. Use a remote control to steer. Take lots of seasickness tablets. Eat soup via gravity feed from a container rigged above you.

Solo.

All for charity of course.

Should get you noticed.

Well the guys selling fags and booze offshore got a lot of press coverage and made lot's of money.

If you want to be different, you could always try an offshore brothel?

Sorry! You have already done the mad bit - buying a boat in the first place!

But I know the feeling - with just a few years to retirement, I am planning all the trips I never had time to make - and probably never will! But, dream on....

I am planning to be the world's oldest round- the- world single hander. As I am only 51 I have a lot of time to practise, but with the aging of the population I should be a good role model to my contemporaries! By the way, does anyone know who holds the current record? No good doing it to find I was a year too young, I'd have to do it again then. Anyway I have lots of time to plan the trip.
