Why stop there?

It's been touted here before that racing yachts should also be zoned, and kept away from areas where boats are trying to make passage in busy area, eg through areas of the Solent.

Can't remember the suggestions, but would be a good idea to stop racing just outside entrance to Cowes which impedes commercial and pleasure traffic

COLREGS, Rule 3(h). 'The term "vessel constrained by her draught" means a power driven vessel which because of her draught in relation to the available depth and width of navigable water is severely restricted in her ability to deviate from the course she is following.' So by definition you can't be 'constrained by draught' whilst sailng. But the words 'constrained by draught' only appear in the rules under Rules 18 and 28; 18 specifies that other vessels (unless NUC or RAM) shold avoid impeding their passage, and 28 specifies the light and shapes to be shown. They don't appear in Rule 9, so you don't have to fly a cylinder for Rule 9 to apply

The thinking behind Rule 9 appears to be that a sailing vessel in a narrow channel may be hampered by the wind direction. If so, then she is allowed to beat up the channel, but mustn't impede other craft (sail or power) whilst doing so.

OK but most of the time the problem arises when motoring and being confronted by dinghies ... i'm absolutely gobsmacked at the risks some of these guys take ie cutting fine under bows when risking capsize in gusty conditions. I race dinghies myself but restrict my aggressive behaviour to the occasional fellow racer who winds me up. Most are OK but there is the occasional [ah em!] who has a win at all cost mentality .. my coping mechanism there is retributive racing .. ie I don't care where I finish as long as I really screw the tosser up!

Nothing wrong with this approach sometimes. Ask Ben Ainslie, he won a gold medal in Sydney using the same tactic in the last race !

Oooh, ye remembered. Anyhow, it wisnae in Cumnock, but no a kick in the erse aff, richt enough. Onyways, ah'm only a quasi-mobo since bein a ragpotter is ma long term ambishun.
