We sailed a bit too close ahead of her and were given a couple of banshee wails and some serious arm waving. It didn't look too big until I saw the lighterage vessel alongside, when it's true scale became apparent.
I heard that all the cash machines in Portsmouth had been bled dry and that supplies of beer were running out due to the mass invasion of some 5,000 crew (apparently the other 1,000 were flown home).
Nimitz seemed bigger, but that was some time ago so not sure.
1,092 feet (332.85 meters)
Water Displacement: 97,000 tons
USS NIMITZ
Overall length: 1,092 feet
Full load displacement: About 95,000 tons
The “Harry S Truman” is a Nimitz class, in other words both the same almost.
I saw USS Saratoga in the Med a few years ago (another class) she looked bigger but is only about 80,000 tons, it would be interesting to see all the USA's carriers at once in the solent wouldn't it, I wonder if they would fit in?
I spent a day on Nimitz - 29/9/80 as a guest of one of the aviators when she visited Portsmouth and was anchored at Spithead. Still got my boarding pass!. A fantastic day that wont be forgotten. The view from the Admirals chair was amazing!. Sailors were playing baseball on the hangar deck - and really hitting them!. I remember commenting to my host when leaving that I was truly glad we were on the same side!. At that time Nimitz was the only one of her class built and was the worlds largest warship.
