That\'s not near Wapping!

Spotted this at Kingston last thursday. I wondered if they got a visitors license.

Re: That\'s not near Wapping!

They have been on an extended patrol for a few days. The officers and their rather wonderful 45 knot boat spent an hour or so at Middle Thames on Sunday. I have yet to download from camera to PC the photograph of my grinning six year old daughter at the helm.

Re: That\'s not near Wapping!

They were around and about all last weekend. Just above Molesey lock on Saturday afternoon and 'pulled' a small launch for a going over while we were there.
On SUnday afternoon they were moored up at the Hampton Sailing Club - shades of 'Duck Patrol' /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Also, a PLA launch passed us heading downriver at Kingston Bridge on Sunday Morning.

Re: That\'s not near Wapping!

They come up quite a lot nowadays , usually overnight at Tedders , and then patrol the next day. As Andrew said , this time they have spent a few days up here.

I saw them at Hampton Sailing Club on Sunday too , i was out for a little walk and to have a chat with the chaps at Hampton Ferry.

Met Polices operational boundary is Thames Ditton , it's Surreys from there on up , but they do do other things while they are up on our little stretch of water /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Personally i think it's great that they are taking more of an interest in the non-tidal Thames.

Re: That\'s not near Wapping!

Whilst in Molesey lock they took down details of all the boats in there, apart from the day hire boat from Thames Ditton. By the sounds of things they are trying to build up a database on boats and boat owners, mostly aimed at boats that are likely to head through London, as part of the anti terrorism bizzo. They had a RIB along with them as well. When we mentioned that we were based at Walton he mentioned that they had been that far and had actually made a couple of arrests! Quite nice to see such a presecnce, and hopefully will be a regular sight as the river must be happy hunting grounds for the unscrupulous who must think they can get away with anything as there is no effectice police presence. Saw him Sunday as well moored up at the Hampton Sailing Club, must have missed you Howard.

Re: That\'s not near Wapping!

If you think their visit was a good thing they would appreciate a letter saying so to their guvnor at Wapping, I menat to add that to my earleir post.

They did pinch a few miscreants, we had some good tales Sunday.

Re: That\'s not near Wapping!

I found a body a couple of years ago, in the river, at Runnymede immediately upstream of French brothers. He was a jumper and when the police realised this and that it was rather a boring corpse it became clear quite quickly that it had been found right on the border of two different forces so they had to work out whose paperwork it was.

Re: That\'s not near Wapping!

Hmmmmm ...

Maybe the guys from Wapping are wrong then ?

They said their boundary is Thames Ditton Island.

Found this online :-

Five police forces are involved in policing the River Thames with The Marine Support Unit of the Metropolitan Police (formerly known as Thames Division), having the responsibility of policing the 40 miles of the River Thames between Dartford Creek and Hampton Court.

The 14 miles of the River between Hampton Court and Bell Weir is policed by Surrey Police who have a dedicated officer based at Shepperton but they do not patrol afloat. The Environment Agency (EA) provides a launch whenever the need arises.

Above Bell Weir the River is policed by Thames Valley Police but this force does not have a dedicated river section although it did, until a few years ago, have its own police launch, 'Sit Pax', but this was decommissioned in 1998.

Re: That\'s not near Wapping!

Hmmm! They missed out mentioning their bigger police boat on the Thames Valley Force. "In Valle Thamesis" the blue light off this boat was mounted on a base with a plaque and given to me. I still have it on show at home.
Sit Pax was a white launch of the same style as regular Thames Conservancy Launches (like mine)

Re: That\'s not near Wapping!

When Sit Pax was sold they didn't want to sell the name with the boat, the guy who bought it said if they didn't give him the name as well he would rename it Tam Pax. He got the name!

Re: That\'s not near Wapping!

Used to see 'Sit Pax' a lot when me and my pals used to go to Henley in our late teens ...

Rather predictably for drunken youths , we christened it 'Tam Pax' /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Looked nice with the white hull as opposed to the blue .

Not an urban myth, told to me personally by the new owner at the time.

Big bloke, well spoken, kissed the Blarney Stone ? If so ask me about him when you see me.
