I have gone and checked pretty much every system on the boat now, and have her pretty much ship shape, and prepareing for the coming winter. I will still be using the boat, go fishing, bit of scuba diving, trips to guernsey and sark/herm etc.
To this end, i dont have a spare anchor, is it wise, or necessary. More to the point, what type should i buy for use as a kedge, (weight, design etc) considering the tidal movemint in and around the channel islands, i reckon may be better to use one than wake up in embarrassing and expensive circumstances.

Also, my tender looks like it has been rolled up and forgotten in the boot, since the boat was built.... Admittedly, i havent tried blowing it up yet, am just more likely going to buy a new one. I have resurected the old yamaha 2.5 2stroke, which i was told was seized, but alas, works fine :)
Any recomendations for a small tender, good quality, rolls up small, suitable for three persons.
Cheers
Rob

I'd put a secondary/kedge anchor very much in the necessary category, particularly if you like to anchor a lot as opposed to using marinas. Type is largely personal choice and what has worked for you in the past but for me the Fortress is hard to beat as a kedge.

Weight, chain and rode etc is dependent on displacement etc.

If you can collect in Dublin I have a nice Avon R250 which you can have for beer money.

Might cost me a bit in diesel to get to Dublin. Thanks very much for the offer though :)
I know very little about anchors, except i have one fitted on the bow...
Boats an old 36ft sunseeker, possibly about 8 tonnes.
Ill do some research on the fortress anchors though....
Cheers

Rob,

as you're using the boat for diving aswell;
my main anker is on a 30m chain and electric winch,
But my spare anker has only 7m chain, and a long rope
40m or 60m length depending on diving destination
for northsea wreckdiving (25.....35m) we use the 60m rope
for zeeland diving anchored max in 10m water, I use the 40m rope

re tender, if still looking for one,
selling a very lightweight plastimo 240L
with a 5hp 2stroke Tohatsu OB
only used 3 x 4 weeks in Croatia
as a tender on our 28ft boat

Thats pretty much what i was planning on doing. I was looking at ropes etc so you have got me thinking.
Main anchor has 40m of chain, with no rope fitted at the moment.
I have 80m of hawser lay still on the drum, but was thinking of switching for a more pliable multiplait rope.
I have room in the anchor locker for more rope, for when diving etc. obviously space is a premium.

Thanks for the offer of tender, but its probably easier for me to pick a new one up in the channel islands.
Everything i have ordered through courier has taken a long time to turn up, and i have no fixed address in the channel islands.
I have a yamaha 2 stroke motor, either 2.5 or 3.5 hp, thats getting a good service as we speak. It looks like new, although i was told it was seized (it wasn't)

Bart,
When diving off your 28ft, are you running down the anchor, or anchoring and then diving off a lazy shot.... (i said it was years since i did scub :)

I was in zeeland area this time last year actually, maybe again in january...

yes, Usually I run down the anker, (from the karnic) and try to have it grip behind the wreck.
I fix a big red boy on the rope, and make sure I can release the boat from the rope with boy, in case a diver is taken by the current

If we can't get the anker grip, we use a shot anker with the boy.

in zeeland I anker in shallow water usually with the main anker,
or I just drop the divers, and pick them up after the dive,

zeeland is our regular dive destination, only 130km from home,
very nice indeed much underwater live,
but for the more adventurous diver :) (current and no light)
