Had problems last time out with the temperature warning light and buzzer coming on.It wasn't overheating the gauge showed normal. Apparently there is one sender for the gauge and one for the light. The one for the light is a staggering £60.Does any one know if by cross referencing there would be an alternative cheaper part or is there any way of fixing it?The engine is a kamd 42a

Its vdo unit the number is on the sender. Vdo are great to deal with and have a network of dealers.

Thanks for that.I will see if I can source the Volvo part number so I can order one and take it down with me as the buzzing will drive me nuts

I have used these people recently (no connection)

I replaced the water temp gauge and sender on my AD41 for less than £25.

If you find trouble getting the right thread, thread adapters are readily available to so you can opt for a common option.

Will the common option work on any gauge?
We were also thinking of puting a pair of gauges on the fly bridge, Sealine in their infinite wisdom missed out one of the most important gauges to give the information needed when your up stairs.I am reliably in formed it's already wired up for it,but putting a none Volvo gauge with a ogenuine one might cause problems.I suppose it would need a special sender to run 2.
Has anyone had experience of doing the same thing with none Volvo parts?
I roughly priced the job up at around £350-£400 as apposed £100 by using Auto marine electrics parts.
I am sure when I come to sell the boat it wouldn't be a deal breaker and £200 squid is half a tank of diesel

If you want it reliable DONT mix other makes of gauge with the Volvo ones, also you need to swap sender for every gauge to double position set up as the resistance output is set up for that purpose. You can do all this from VDO units and leave your existing gauges downstairs.

I do have in my stock two temp and two oil pressure gauges new if your interested , boat jumbles are also the place and sometime you get lucky from coastal rides. Mix gauges at your peril.

I had the same issue with my Fly instruments. Are you aware of the Noland RS11 engine data convertor - it takes standard gauge signals and converts them to NMEA2000 format to be displayed on your plotter ?

I can now see accurate engine RPM which is great for balancing the engines, plus Oil pressure and Water temp, and the latest Noland has additional channels to see something else, like fuel tank levels.

The guage and sender have to be matched (specified resistance at specific temps) and whilst there are some standards that are widely used, there are plenty of others it would seem, including my VP original ones that are less common. Thats why I replaced gauge and sender together with a set that use common values.
As for reliability, well I have only had them a few months so time will tell!!
There are purpose built senders for dual stations.
Incidently the A.S.A.P Supplies catalogue has a few pages of usefull information on this subject. Dont know if its replicated on the website.
