teleflex cable change to hydraulic

i have a teleflex with assisted hydraulic on my KAD 44 EDC DP-E
there is significant play in the wheel, teleflex is 20 yrs old

have had a close look at the cable run, there is no way this is coming out easily, its behind tanks through tight holes and electrical wires around the teleflex that are visible but not reachable
furthermore there is no easy way to fit a new cable by drilling new holes either and just leave the old cable in place
and just to add complications to fixing this issue, the access at the back if the KAD is very tight, so just replacing the ram and fixing it to the bulkhead would be 'fun'

i did see the same boat as mine with hydraulic steering only, seemed to work just fine

the existing set up obviously has a ram behind the KAD with teleflex projection to the side, see image attached

1) how does the teleflex alter interface with the hydraulic assist ?

2) can unplug the teleflex cable from the ram and fit a (custom) second hydraulic assist to the teleflex port ?

the thing that the cable is attached to comes off and it is replaced with the hydraulic ram.
little pipes go to the helm.

do you have have autopilot?

tnx, i have no issue with buying another ram , but installing that and fixing it, the holes are bound to be in a different location will be a challenge.

Ok it looks like your system is different to the one I did which was on a Mercruiser leg.
i bought the right ram and it fitted perfectly. but it didn’t have hydraulics like yours on the existing.
Have you tried the teleflex/seastar catalogue? It is helpful.

I fitted a hydraulic system to my sailing yacht. Easy to fit and interface to hyd auto pilot pump. All parts available in sea star/ Teleflex catalogue.

As Mark can attest; the steering can point the boat in the right direction. However the boat might not want to go that way!

1 = ram attachment to the steering arm of the DPE
2 is that one of the bolts needed to remove the ram ?

You can leave the ram in place and remove the cable, you undo the large nut at the back of the ram & remove the split pin and clevis pin that attaches the inner cable to the steering arm. Once the nut is undone & clevis pin is removed you can then slide out the cable leaving the power assistance ram in situ.
If you have room you can install a generic outboard side mount style ram directly to your power assistance ram and couple up the hydraulic hoses as normal.
You dont need a particularly heavy duty hydraulic system as its only supplying command signals for the power assistance. If your tight on space IE cant fit the length of an outboard ram to the side of the engine then you may need to remove the power assistance ram and or buy a dedicated kit for your engine and drive.

Thats exactly the thing, the end of that ram will fit exactly where the end of your current cable attaches. If you have space buy the ballanced ram where the inboard end of the piston extends out the back of the cylinder that way you get the same turns lock to lock. It should be listed as a balanced system or similar description

cool, yeh def have the space
so how does that attach to the teleflex fitting, i cant see a collar on the ram ?
and does the balanced ram just kind of hang in space, which would be excellent as it would save me fitting a supporting braket ?

The end of the ram is tapped the same thread as the nut on the cable so simply screws on, the new ram cannot be secured as it moves in a slight arc as the steering turns. There is usually a couple of flats on the power ram that need to be in roughly the correct orientation, probably vertical not 100% sure on volvo but merc is vertical and its a very similar system
