Taylor Bulkhead Diesel Heaters safety?

On the video, I think your thermocouple is just coiled on the left hand side. It’s a thin copper tube / wire. One end feeds into the back of the blue button. The other end goes under the burner and up into the chamber through the hole your getting back firing through.

What does your above deck chimney set up look like? Got a photo of that?
Oh that's what that is. At the time of writing I forgot about it but I am ob my way to the boat now anyway, I'll give it a go. Above deck I have the h cowl on a shaft. I can take pics in an hour or so

Good stuff. I’ll be aboard this evening too if you have any more questions on your setup I’ll be able to share photos of mine

Turn off your diesel. Undo the diesel pipe on the bottom of Burnet pot and then remove the Philips screw on the front above the burn chamber pot nut.this will free the pot assembly and you can look inside and see what's there or not!! I think you will be missing the burner stool for the flames to be able to come down and lick the cushion. Good luck with it.

Here's the underneath of my burner pot showing rhe hole u have but flames can't come down as the burner stool is in place.
Other pic is of my old burner stool next to new one.£160 for the new one a few months ago. £200 for other bits etc. Heater (40+ years old) now working well.

Thank you. I will look at it momentarily currently still doing outside jobs, but it's colling down so migjt be a good idea to test the heater soon.

May I ask did the old burner stool use to look like the new one or did the design change? Tia

Okay that project is on ice for a while.

The bolt for the window just broke (I was going to quickly replace it before doing anything else) and now I can't get it out, broke two drill bits on it and don't even have a fitting bolt handy anyway.

No time for this. I got other things I need to do first. Maybe I'll resurrect the thread in a few weeks.Screenshot_20250404_173220_com.android.gallery3d.jpg

I think the heaters are all slightly different in their start up and burn operation due to the variables of the install and flue and cowl and wind. You need time to get to know their foiables. I tried several times to find and speak to a guru at the manufacturing company. By their own admission there wasn't anyone left to help and all they could do was paraphrase the manual
They informed me they were discontinuing manufacture as they weren't selling any. Not surprising really when they cost as much?

I think the £80 Chinese diesel heater did for them really, which is a shame as Taylors heaters are lovely things. Still miss mine.

i have a charcoal heater on my contessa and put too much meths on that once when trying to get it started. it was alarmingly flame-y, but all fine in the end and i learned how much i actually should use. I agree these older style heaters are a bit of an art, but I love the classical style of it. That said, the convenience of the chinaspacher on our catamaran is VERY hard to beat. unless you are totally sold on the concept of the taylors heater I would get on and fit the chinese heater - sometimes technology advances for good reasons.

I have one on board. Eber. Put it in new as a replacement for the last one. It's convenient , flick a switch and it's on. However I went for a taylors aswell as its quiet, uses no battery at all. Dry heat and a flame to watch.
I can leave it on all night .

Same here. The Eber is great when we get up in the morning and the boats a bit chilly as we have morning coffee. However for long cold evenings aboard, it’s as “hygge” as having a hair dryer to heat the cabin.

Here is a picture of the inside, I took it apart and found this. Doesn't look pristine, but also not fubar either. WhatsApp Image 2025-04-22 at 22.04.23.jpeg

I am updating this because I don't know how or what happened, but something happened to the line here. It started dripping like crazy. Ruined all my clothes, which I kept under the vberth.... Must ahve dripped for days. I kept thinking something smells diesel-y in here, and always thought it's the bilge or something. Couldn't find it. Until I did.

So now it's all very different. When I press the blue button, I actually have diesel drip through, which before was like one, reluctant drop MAYBE every two minutes or so. Now suddenly I had a real waterfall in there. Amazing for that part. So the diesel never worked, because there must have been some blockage that worked itself free.

The bad news is that the joints all really horrible, It leaks behind the valve and at the 90 degree bit, and I can't seem to tighten it any more (without breaking off the flimsy tubing anyway)....

Long story short: it wasn't the pump at all, taht seems to be working very fine. I don't hear it still, but fuel is being delivered as it drips through now as much as I press that blue button there...

I went out and bought bolts to replace the old one, only need to drill through the left one, as it broke in the middle somewhere. Not entirely sure why it's so tough to drill out, but I kept breaking bits. Might buy a cobalt one and get it done soon.

So if anyone was still wondering, it was definitely some blockage because now it's worked itself out and it's flowing. Just need to drill the bolt out, replace with new, and fix the leaking joints. Pretty sure I'll break it apart though... Any plumbers know a trick to get a "grip" on the parts to turn the nuts cleanly or is it just fiddle work?

Ok. Thanks for the update and sorry for your leak.
The self tapping screw you are trying to remove is stainless steel like the unit. This is difficult to drill without a sharp bit. Be slow and careful with a sharp new drill.
The burner stool looks ok from the photo. better than mine was.
The leaks sometimes don’t respond to extra force as they have a small olive which can be over crushed. It’s simple brake pipe from cars and parts can be ordered via eBay to re make pipe fittings or use ptfe tape
The blue button thermocouple may be broke allowing constant drips. Buy a new one.
