Hi folks
have a major problem! can anybody help please.
My Targa has gone through 3 s/b alternators and 1 port alternator, plus the battery link switch blows the main breaker on the port engine when used, and to top it off the engine bay cooling fan has now seized, the Volvo dealer suggests the fault has always been there? has any body else suffered a similar fate?
She runs on KAD300's and has done 200 hrs and only 19 months old. Any help would be appreciated /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Do you know what has 'gone' on the alternators? Windings/diodes/voltage regulator...?
Is it always the same fault(s)?
Obviously with this number of failures you have a problem which is still there and causing subsequent failures. Possibly a cable shorting to ground?
Suggest you need to get a (very) competent diagnostic engineer to investigate on board.

nb the difference between an average engineer and a good one is that an average one knows how things work. A good one knows how they fail. Unfortunately not many of the latter.

I had a problem with my port alternator which had to be repaired a couple of times. I had to have... I think it was called a split charge diode fitted so both alternators charged all batteries thus spreading the charging load.

Engines are KAD 43's

Hi

what were the symptoms when the regulators failed? - warning light stayed on, not charging, over-charging?

A friend has these motors in a different boat & has had two alts fail so far .

After the altenator packed up the voltmeter on the dash started fading other than that nothing else happened for approx 45 mins then the oil pressure gauge dropped a little and after approx 2 hours the engine stopped altogether as no power left in the battery, had to be the engine with the power steering!!!
I should mention perhaps that when the ignition key is turned on and before you turn it all the way (whilst engaging the EDC's ) the charge alarm goes off for the s/b engine but goes off again when the engine has started?
