Tappits

[ QUOTE ]
ok so you rip the bits off to get to the tappits and find that none need adjustment would you still charge the silly rates or would you what ?

The adjustment (if required) is no more than 5% of the job so don't expect any reduction if none is needed.

Does the same rule apply to the 4 cylinder engines ? (I My case Kad 32s). I got mine checked at 200 hours and no adjustment was required. I am now near 400 hours.

Cummins-mercruiser 4.2 L did away with tappet adjustment altogether years ago.

I cant remember the last time I had a car engine checked , I am sure you dont need to with modern engines.

Do the new Volvos still have adjustable tappets ?

I ask because a boat mechanic tried to lift my leg and charge me for tappet adjustment, I asked a few more questions and found he had not even been on my boat to service it at all never mind adjust the tappets (which are not adjustable on cummins 4.2L diesel range).
Saved £900 !
Three times he looked me in the eye asking for cash saying it had been serviced.

Always paint the rocker nuts and check each and very nut before you pay.

THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO FORUM MEMBERS WHO CLEARLY ARE DILIGENT, EVEN HAPPY TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The new D series have finally come into the 21 st century with hydraulic lifters so there is no adjustment required.

DSW I dont charge silly rates so get that one straight, and yes you would be charged for the time taken to dismantle and reassemble the engine, im not a charity!

Very well put!
Do you ever venture down Bristol way?My AD31Ps have 200 hrs now and AFAIK have never had the tappets checked /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Also volvopaul (if i may ask!)

(a) do you ever venture down Antibes way (Nice airport)? Would you, if it was 3 boats literally side-by-side, all with D12s, ie 6 xD12s, and with a volvo agent and an oil shop up the road for spare parts supplies?

(b) One of the 3 boats is new and in warranty, so are you "official" volvo and can you stamp the service book as an official volvo service person?

Antibes? Bristol?
Guess he'll be visiting you first! I'll come to carry the tool box /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Better call my Car mechanic mate!

Come on Sneds
Get in the engine compartment and check those tappets, you know you want to.
Joking apart, easy job on you engines, take your time just to get used to it and there won't be a problem and when you finished you will wonder what all the fuss was about.
Use a decent socket and ratchet on the crank shaft bolt head to rotate the engine and if you go pass the position to check a rocker just carry on to the next and check it when you are next round there - did that bit make sense?
Hope all goes well.

Steve

You surprise me with that, I would have thought you would have done them yourself. Agree with the hours, every 200, the strange thing is though I have only have to adjust mine once on the first 200 hours, I am now just pass the 1000 hour mark on them with no further adjustment - I am just waiting for the outdrives to fall off now!!

Steve

Let me rephrase that:
"I do mine myself every 200 hours using the instructions as provided by spannerman"

Col changes the outdrive gaiters and does any major outdrive repairs, I do pretty much everything else.

dv.

I am pleased to hear that.

I have to ask about the instructions from Spannerman with reference adjusting the tappets, any usual helpful tips?

Steve
