Yes.
Thistle: no need to remember it if you understand why it's so. The thin end is more flexible than the thick end, and reduces the tendency to give a hard kink in the sail at the forward end of the batten.

An old trick in dinghy catamarans in heavy weather is to reverse the battens to let the leech fall off on a FB main

Well you learn something new every day if you are lucky.
It may be an old trick to you, but its a new one to me, yet as soon as i read this it made perfect sense!
I guess that in dinghy sized cats that you would have to make this call before going out yes?
Cant imagine dropping sail and end for ending battens in a rising gale on a hobie 14 ft for example.

The other thing on the bigger diamond controlled masts is to leave the mast rotation straight fore and aft... Yes, you do need to decide before leaving shore...
