Can't believe there that this is standard but on my engines there is no way of getting the impellers out without major dismantling.

Boat is Sealine F43, engines TAMd63p's. Impellers are mounted on the side of the engine which would be fine for port and a bit of a bugger for starboard but the oil filter and bypass filter are directly behind the impeller face plate, about 30mm away. the face plate faces to the stern and although it is just about possible to remove the face plate there is no room to pull the impeller.

As far as I can see to change the impeller you can either drain the oil and remove the filters or you can remove the entire raw water pump. neither are going to be possible at sea.

Has anyone else encountered this and is there a solution?

You dont need to drain the oil to drop the filter, granted its messy but a heavy duty bin bag below saves a lot of mess
On my P38 port engine is ok, starboard is a pig, i usually take the alternator out and work from above rather than from the side due to the proximity to the stb fuel tank.
You can just get away with using the Jabsco puller tool if you take the standard T bar out and replace it with a bolt
Cheers Barry

as per Machaseo, and replace one of the clamp screws with a shorter bolt on the puller. then you can get it right in without removing the filters. I found it usually takes two pulls to get the impeller out. So push puller in as far as you can with the inner facing clamp pre wound in, tighten the outer facing clamp as much as possible getting the extractor centred (ish) on the pump shaft, then tighten the extractor bolt using a 3/8" socket set (small than 1/2" type). Have a practice on the port engine and develop your technique. It is a pig and takes patience. do a search on the forum for techniques for getting the impeller back in etc. Also find some sort of foam pad or carpet to put on top of the engine when you do the starboard one as you will end up lying on top of the engine and it gets painful.

Without sounding big headed the F43 starboard engine impellers is one of the easier ones to take out, remove both oil filters and use the jabsco tool to grip and extract, , lubricate the new one, no need for serious dismantling of anything else.

My stbd impeller failed at sea, was only fitted a week before, rubber became detatched from shaft. As Paul said, not worth trying to change it at sea, ran in on one engine, fired up stb again for berthing, shut down as soon as the ropes were on. Got pissed that night and fitted the spare the next day.
As a side note i removed the remote filter set up on my engine due to it leaking, i had to strip the coolers off and remove the dual control cable mechanism to get to it, rather than change all the seals rebuilt everything and find out ther was still a problem, i did away with it. When i need to change the filters and do the impeller on the stb engine as i mentioned on an earlier post I pull the alternator and go in from the front, access to the stb side of the stb engine on a P38'with 63p's is a joke.
