Hi all,
Hoping I can get some advice or previous experiences from members.
History:
Sold my Rodman last year and purchased a 1989 Arcoa 10.80 with twin TAMD 41A in December.
Had it surveyed a no major issues and it ran well during the sea trial.
There was a slight bit more grey smoke from the starboard engine, but all in I went for it.
Lockdown:
Spent the last few months of lockdown tidying things up, mainly cosmetic and electronics.
Engine wise I've not done huge amounts but I did pull and clean the aftercoolers and also replaced the crankcase breather filters with the 3D Custom Parts crankcase upgrade kit.
Back in the water:
Got back in yesterday. By co-incidence one of the mechanics from the yard was there so came with me for the boats first run. All started fine, smoke from both engines as I believe is normal. Once we got going and things warmed up we increased the throttles, I was on deck ensuring everything looked and sounded OK. From low revs there was distinct black smoke coming from the starboard engine, any smoke from the port cleared quickly. He slowly increased throttles and the black smoke increased and didn't clear, it wasn't huge amounts but was very noticeable. At about 80% throttle we heard a whirring/popping sound, best way I can describe it was like the recirculating dump valve I had on my Mitsubishi Evo. We stopped immediately and checked everything, all visually at least was fine, no sign of any leaks, hoses off etc. After that the starboard engine would idle fine and accelerate fine but not go beyond 80% throttle and the black smoke stayed, port engine ran fine. All gauges were reading similar for both engines.
Mechanic had no tools so couldn't check the boost, but after removing the air filter was happy the turbo seemed OK - was spinning, no excessive play or oil leaks. Had a check of the injectors, cracked each open slightly when idling, for all bar one there was a noticeable change in engine tone when it was opened so suspects maybe an injector issue.
So intend to pull the injectors and have them checked. If that doesn't show anything he suggested focusing on the turbo next.
Any other views on likely culprits or past experiences.
Thanks in advance for your help.
