Hello,
I eventually got hold of a soap-bar size piece of commercial tallow at the local fishery, about 250g, what can I do with it?
I reckon:
a) bottom of lead sounder, previously ascertain which type of sea bottom one is anchoring into is paramount to avoid increasing the number of conflictual anchor related discussions
b) the '70s Glénans manual suggests to melt it and pour inside closed body turnbuckles; I am using Lanocote but why not tallow
c) the package mentions brazing, not that I know anything about it but is animal grease necessary to solder copper tubes?
Any other uses for my soap bar?

Used by plumbers back in the dark ages for wiping joints and repairs to lead pipes, by coachbuilders for leading panels prior to polyester fillers. Traditionally, stern gland packing was tallow impregnated cotton.
