Taking pets to Europe without a car

I normally take the dog in the car to Amsterdam: this time we'll be going for six months and leaving the car behind. Any one know how to get the dog over from Southampton without a car (and without it costing an arm and a leg!) I checked with Bournemouth Airport and no joy there.

If you are flying, most airlines will take dogs, in a suitable dog box, in the hold. I took my cavalier king charles to the USA that way in 1993, Heathrow to St Louis, St louis to Phoenix. The dog was fine despite the long flights, so at trip to Amsterdam should be no problem, but you will probably need to do a full price sheduled airline from Gatwick or Heathrow. As an alternative why not price getting a taxi operator to take you and the dog via the tunnel? Depending on how many travel it might even be cheaper than flying.

You can only take your pet into Europe through a designated port and on commercial transport - i.e. not on a yacht/mobo. -or through the tunnel. So you could hire a car one way & go thro the tunnel, or look at foot passenger on a ferry or commercial airline (but thats probably only full price carriers)

Query that - I think most mainland European countries will let pets in with little or no formality. The problem is bringing them back which requires chip, passport, vaccinations, vet inspection etc. and can only be done through an approved operator.

Can't speak for which operators will let you take a dog on board not in a car. I'd guess that Eurotunnel might be your best bet.

I concur.
There is no problem taking a dog out of the UK on any transport you have available - except ferries which usually require them to be carried in a car.
ITS' BRINGING THEM BACK THAT IS THE PROBLEM.

Not true, You cannot travel on Eurotunnel (i.e the shuttle) without a car.
Eurostar is the train service through the tunnel and I do not know if they allow dogs at all.
