Don't say that too loudly.for when you're picking up refugees?
Did you decide on a route? I'm hoping you'll end up near my home port (Portsmouth) so I can drop by. Hope you can share AIS info at some point, I had added the ship's previous AIS to my "fleet" on marinetraffic so i could have a chance of seeing if you're passing nearby, but i'm guessing you're going to have a new code now.
Hi Sorabain,
MMSI (?) XXXXXX
Does that mean anything to you?
Hours? You meant minutes, I reckon...!within a couple of hours delay
Once activated, that ID means anyone can track the vessel (within a couple of hours delay), and obtain certain ownership details etc., so you may wish to keep that ID to a smaller number of recipients than on a public forum...

Question to the forum:
Does anyone know how a bulb such as the one above (surprisingly large!) works regarding Ice class? Is it just the thickness of the steel and accommodating reinforcement of the scantlings - or is Ice Class also about how the design must handle breaking the ice? It's ice class C, which i found somewhere means capable of navigating up to 30cm of Ice with Caution.... which seems very thick to me.
Thoughts on the matter are very welcome...
R.
Actually, I was a tad surprised by Divemaster1 warning.
This public webpage allows anyone to find the MMSI by knowing just the boat name...

Interestingly, although i know all details, we dont show up on that.... and it's been registered since before the tow to Skude.
Maybe this has all been a dream afterall?! (Who did i need to take to dinner?!)
In seriousness - the IMO number... can that change, there's a certain appeal in putting a clean break between her commercial life and her retirement?
I see the old credentials are still active... which is confusing. Need to dig out a secret transponder it seems!

The standards for construction to meet the requirements for Ice Class are set out under IACS (International Association of Classification Societies).
You can select the best classification society for your requirements as they vary in small degrees as to cost and how they apply their rules which have small and subtle differences. The Hull Underwriters will have their own preferences but will not usual prove too difficult with the owners given how soft the market is at any time.
You are right about the thickness of the shell plate, the grade of steel used, the size and spread of the frames and stiffeners all lead to produce the strength that is required. The whole thing can be negated by a clown on the bridge entering ice at speed.
I investigated one incident a number of years back where a non ice class general cargo ship with a cargo of bagged sugar went to St Petersburg arriving on our Xmas Eve. The following morning the Duty Officer walked down the quay to read the draughts and found the vessel by the head and when they looked in the No.1 Hold the bagged cargo was under a layer of water and ice. The OOW had entered thin (less than a centimetre thick) ice at full speed and a crack was formed on the waterline together with a washboard effect on the hull plating.
By the way, not wishing to teach Grandmother to schuck eggs, but have you arranged your Protection & Indemnity insurance? You will need this for protection against Crew Claims, Wreck Removal and Oil Pollution all of which can give rise to criminal as well as civil liabilities. It would be a very expensive mistake to ignore it.
Wishing you every success.

Do you know how marine traffic gets its information? I can find the vessels of various "well known" forumites in the med by name, which displays their MMSI (along with a pic or two). Was wondering if you have to opt in to this, or if it's public domain (at least the MMSI - vessel name mapping, not owner)
Brilliant. Sorry to hear about the sugar incident.
P&I is proving problematic. We have two vendors still attempting to quote. But I would adore guidance on the matter.
She's a veritable "pig iron under water, fire risk" I'd say. But it seems like it's the first time any underwriters I can find, have seen anything like this. Thoughts are most welcome.
