Cruise Reports Taking our yacht to Sweden for the summer - any 50m marinas?

Forgot to mention that with so much indispensable fuel on board there will probably be tanker certification requirement for both master and crew, additional vessel certification and mandatory certified fire fighting crew qualification requirements etc.

In respect to voyage planning and reportig, there will be reporting requirements at each intended port as per the vessels DNV Classification, and I am sure that each port visited will be very interested in inspecting the vessels current and up-to date crew and ship certificates etc.... page 16 here will describe some of the current documentation she needs to carry ... https://rules.dnvgl.com/docs/pdf/DNV/rulesship/2003-01/ts701.pdf

This is why i asked. You just cannot "rock up" to ports in a boat like that with a merry crew of custard loving enthusiasts no matter how good their skills are. I have no doubt a collection of crew from this forum could do it but it's all about certification. I just remember the op saying because it's NZ registered it doesn't need many crew? My understanding would be they wouldn't let any Tom Dick or Harry just pull up into port in a boat like that without the relevant certified crew. I would have thought so just from an insurance point of view also. The OP did say his crew always travel with him so maybe they have but he also said his NZ mates who have a 100ft yacht were worried about sailing it! Doesn't make sense to me.

Yep there's a very big difference, legislatively, between 100ft and 50m; it's quite possible to drive 100ft on a Yachtmaster ticket; it very isn't possible to do the same with your 50m boat.

If you take for example French law, the size does not matter as long as she is a pleasure boat. After her initial refit if her designation is changed from military/commercial to pleasure I see no problem

Excellent news, I can now start my bid for the Ark Royal and call her my pleasure yacht. I'm sure every French marina will, then welcome me with open arms (& lock gates)

One of the contributors to MBM has the tender to Ark Royal what is the difference . If you changed a pleasure boat to an aircraft carrier then you would have a problem. But to take a decommissioned military vessel and convert her to pleasure has been done many times before, look at all the MTB around now as live aboards or whatever.

:D:D:D:D:(

How big is the tender......40ft?

World of difference at 50m! Think of the environmental impact if you ground it for a start or the damage it could to a harbour or the power cable it could pull up if you drop the anchor in the wrong spot etc etc.

It's all guess work though as the op could well have a full time tanker captain or former RN ark Royal commander for all we know. The point I feel being made is that a bunch of well intentioned custard loving forumites would make great company and crew no doubt. Surely though under the direction on people expert in the operation of this type of vessel whether it is classed as commercial or pleasure. Still a big lump of steel which could easily damage anyone. To underestimate it would be foolish hence all the legislation.

I think you have just described a most excellent adventure:encouragement:

Are you Capital_R ?

I have already answered that. Yes I have a superyacht and a Benneteau.
The Benneteau is like new hardly any hours on the clock. But the superyacht is knackered, all she's used for is to go get spares for the Benneteau.

I Think the custard test is required here with regards to your Super Yacht lol. ;):encouragement:

Would you settle for the custard test on the Benneteau?
There are far more superyachts here in the SoF than Birdseye Custard powder tins. In fact custard powder is so valuable it has to be smuggled in on fast Axopars

Nailed it.

Regs are very light on Private yachts. >400GT means MARPOL... which is just common sense (have a rubbish plan, antifouling records, etc) no matter the class.

Most ports want Pilots and Tugs for vessels that big, depends on the ports. Some start as low as 250GT. Others exempt you if your captain has passed local port certification. I'm cleared for arrival in Patras, for example already as master, with low end qualifications - and if not me, the acting captain has to sumbit credentials 10 business days before arrival.... which could in theory be refused, requiring a captain, or to stand off until approved.

Auckland is 500GT on the harbour limits without a pilot/harbour certification.

All for very good reason, as mentioned. Environmental damage goes up, as does the effort required to undo other forms.

However, the biggest hurdle is explaining to anyone, why you'd have a boat that big that you wouldn't want to charter - and therefore keep in commercial class (with 12 person passenger limits, etc).

I know, this is going to be used during summer for 2-3 months per year, and be on standby/warm lay-up/winterized the rest of the time, and unappealing to charter, so we keep her surveyed as she would otherwise be, but register her in private use, where "laid up" status or 'seasonal pleasure use' is expected, not the exception.

So we need VPP to include port agents and port authority permission to anywhere .... but this has been the norm for me sailing red ensign vessels in Australia, and the South Pacific and even Croatia, where you do have to report all movements in advance anyway, much lile a flight plan for aircraft.

So it's an undertaking for sure; no-where near the same as having a lovley 50' slice of heaven.

But like Bouba, although we're not the same person, nor have we even met, if it hasnt been done before, it has a certain appeal.

Next Joint Project?

Briefly returning back to the real vessel at hand, and moving her; we have a unique situation where her whole former crew (Captain, C.Eng and down) are really keen to help whenever we need them (pending work commitments) and the ex chief engineer has been brilliant the past couple of months working on the initial conversion steps.

One of the big draw-cards to this specific boat, prior to the original purchase, was the resounding affection the former crew all have for being at sea on her.

Happy times ahead. :-)

They are the rafts off Guard Celena?

These are the spares...

She has three more cannisters, port side, starboard side, and amid-ships (forward)...

Sorry... yes... sorry for the lack of information. I think they said 108 pax of in service rafts, and unsure amout of overdue capacity...

These came with the Aleta... branded Celena, it appears. Owners said we could keep them. Might make a good slide/water toy?!

Also got a Honda motor-scooter, of the terrestrial variety, in amongst the equimpent aboard... it's an adventure, for sure.

I'm guessing the forum crew have not been assembled and MV Boaty McCustardface is not departing on it's jolly's this weekend as planned?:ambivalence:
