Cruise Reports Taking our yacht to Sweden for the summer - any 50m marinas?

So did you ever buy that brace of 120ft NATO gun ships ?

Henry :)

No... did not.

I think the ones we looked at were actually 136'... but no. Here was the back up plan for those:

I can tell you a story about another boat we did end up with.... a 49m fleet oiler/standby vessel with 750 cubes of diesel capacity and accommodations for 250 pax in case of a disaster.

We showed receipts to the World Bank and UN and got a more sensible outcome. Stuck with the tanker tho.

So i boughtt if off the company and am having it converted to a long range humanitarian services platform/yacht.

Anyone want to know more about that?

PS. The cover story for the trip to Latvia to look at the Storm/Hauk Class Patrol Boats was a ripper.

Ask me about that over a beer.

Visions of boatloads of cash dashing across the ocean struck a chord having recently taken on armed guards as we headed through the Red Sea and went past Somalia !

Henry :)

It wasn't at all dramatic. We were in the lap of luxury. The zodiac making its way over from a rather drab, sinister looking mother ship added a bit of pre-dinner spice.

Link not working

I bet. My little brother was on one of these 100m++ yachts going down to the Dubai GP recently, had russian millitary escort. And a guy aboad known as "the field operative".

God save the little somali if they messed with that convoy...

Lord Palmerson in the Kremlin...!

Found this interesting from 6:00 on...
8:37 on... 130odd feet high speed vessels and we need a couple of them...

Urgh...

That was a nasty interview.

I was wearing shorts for that i believe.

The full length interview was an ambush.

Id welcome you to take that down if you like....

The less linking/encouragement google has of it... the better!

So what have you had boat wise up to now ?

Henry :)

This is the first.

Spent a youth sailing in dinghies all the way up to 80 footers. Then went to university which was a very serious time for me... Then work. Did a sydney to hobart back in the 1990s...

None of those boats mine tho.

Apart from the company 49m tanker you got stuck with after sticking it 'to' the World bank?
This will be first 'personal' one I guess.:D

Well there you go, the real deal. Good for you. Look forward to updates on your build. Might be a good idea to start a new thread for that called something else. I think a picture of the finished ship being launched with a packet of custard bashed on the front would be epic and bring better fortune than champagne :)

Sounds like the makings of an epic forum cruise!

I'll post over a bottle of Bushmills! Send plenty of pics as I watch in envy from a wet, miserable West of Ireland.

Will update this in a bit... reading through the old posts to see if i sound as crazy as you all made out.... so far I seem pretry polite!

We hear a lot of people complaining they went onto a stand at a boat show and weren't taken seriously. I wonder if the forum has been just as guilty.

To be fair most people don't open their boat ownership with a 50m oil tanker so you can see why the mistake was made. We have high flyers in various fields levelled out by people like me. There is quite a lot of expertise on the forum in one form or another. I don't think we've had anyone who's owned a 50m fuel tanker before but we have witnessed quite a few boat builds in the past including a few of decent size.

7m ribs are very much in the sweet spot of forum experience and knowledge. I think the concensus is you have been led astray a bit in terms of performance and range. As a general guide many of our boats are designed around 10 hours performance range with a 20% safety net. But that represents big tanks In a conventional hard hulled boat.

My own boat is a 50ft flybridge with a pair of 700hp diesel CAT lumps. The 2 fuel tanks hold just over 2,250 litres which equate to about 10 hours flat out, which to be fair you would never do, A bit more at cruising speeds.

A rib tends to have more limited fuel capacity but everything is possible. I think you quoted 47 knots top speed which would mean pretty beefy (thirsty) engines - I'm assuming 2. Doing anything like that sort of speed would require very benign conditions and I'm not sure the fuel capacity could support 10'hours even if the crew could !

As for the numbers on the mother ship I would have to yield to more expert members. Obviously if she is a dedicated tanker fuel capacity will be extreme at the expense of accommodation and recreational space. Ordinarily she would have been carrying someone else's fuel but you could use it for your self. It depends how drastic your refurbishment plans are.

At 50m existing crew areas would be generous compared to our sized boats. Traditionally a privately owned 50m vessel would have extensive areas dedicated to recreation and living. I'm guessing in your case those spaces are more compromised ?

Anyway I look forward to learning more.

Henry :)

Edited to add: Don't think this lets you off the Custard test :)

I think "Custard" would be a great name for a small ship.....

Thanks Henry;

Custard, pity the poor boat, has been indelibly etched on the soul of this project.

As for taking on a tanker as a project - sometimes you just have to make lemonade!

This is an interesting project - I didn't mean to step on any toes... i was looking for swarm intelligence on berthing in the north... and to hear stories of good places to go.

The rib is being a nightmare. It was supoosed to be a nice simple Novurania.... but i got convinced to approve a huge one with a v8 inboard. All the stats provided to me. And its now stuck in Germany with parts missing and people having to fly back and forth to pick up bits. It's been nearly 20k in soft costs. I dare not get started or I'll unleash on the topic!

I've sailed across the Tasman Sea a few times, been in a few nasty storms. Always, 36 hours after a storm, it's beautiful. So based on that... if we had a medical emergency, we could get someone half way to safety. To be revised.

Heli-pad on the back is easy. Not certified. Just space.

Like the sound of your boat. Seems far more sensible than mine..!

On the 50m - leaving the fuel tanks alone; all things to do with stability are being retained. Just extending the main deck and changing the interior furnishings. 50m×10m is a huge space to work with, and we've got the following decks;

L4: sundeck
L3: bridge/master ensuite
L2: guest deck (2x 2bdr apartments, foredeck/aft deck)
L1: main deck/boat deck (aft saloon and guest cabin, dining room, lounge; side decks, main entry, and a tonne of crew and utility space forward.
L0: forward utility space, forward engine room (to become owners suite); forward guest cabins, owners suite/office, lounge. Main stair well, dining room and lounge, with (in the future) beachclub doors (this whole area can revert to survivor seating) - his and hers showers/bathrooms - main-deck staircase. Aft engineroom and sterring.

Tank level: bulbous bow balast, fuel tanks, forward engine room, more fuel tanks, permanent concrete balast, more tanks, then lower level of the aft engine room.
