I am off to Turkey at the end of July and I am wondering what the current situation is in relation to taking a Turkish Regd. charter boat into a Greek port. I telephoned the Greek Tourist Board who did not seem to know the answer, but sent me a very nice book about sailing in Greece. As Bodrum is really close to a number of Greek islands it would be fun to call in to a few. It used to be prohibitively expensive to do such a thing, anybody know what the current position is?

This is probably not very helpful but just this morning I heard a programme on the BBC World Service ("Outlook"?) which had an item about Greek and Turkish Cypriots being able to go back to visit their pre-1974 homes. There's an item about the relaxation of the green line on the bbc world service website.

Current Sailing Today mag has a badly written charter story about the Dodecanese which states that for 50 something (dollars, drachma, euro, lira?) you can take a Greek boat into Turkey. Dunno if it works vice-versa, but I guess it might.

Think the charter company concerned was Tenrag - maybe they'd know if you called them?

To be \"Technically correct\".....

A nonEU registered yacht needs both a Cruising Permit and a Transit Log. You can get these at your first port of entry at the Port Police office (look for the large Greek flag or the officers in V smart black uniforms) LAst time I heard of the cost it was $50. However there are many cases of boats entering and exiting Greek harbours with no such documentation. You might wish to risk it be be aware that the British way of sneaking out of harbours without paying for a night's stay and considering it a sort of achievement isn't taken kindly in Greece and does nothing to improve the already bad opinnion that some greeks have of their British charter visitors.

Assuming that you do get the appropriate documentation, there are many islands that you might enjoy. Simi for one is especially attractive.

Re: To be \"Technically correct\".....

Yes, we chartered from Portway out of Gocek in Turkey, and it was 50 (quid I think) for some bit of bureaucratic paper. As Steve says, you can take the risk of not paying, but who knows...(think about the plane spotters!!)... We didn't bother in the end, consoled ourselves with the thought that the Turkish stuff was cheaper and the Turks nicer. :>)
