I am not convinced the truth is told on the sailinganarchy forum.
Support I've seen from Tacktick is nothing but excellent and a quick look at the following page on Tackticks website might suggest "foul play" on the americans part!
We and Tacktick buy cheap sandwiches from the same supermarket. They delight in cleaning out early so I end up with fish paste on weiss carbohydrs. Twice a year I have crew visits and gain the upper hand briefly as I send the boys out to 'clean up the pastries around town'
Perhaps your unit was made during one of our crew visits?
Tacktick will sort you out, but you need to talk to them before they can
As a Tacktick dealer, Kev, can you advise on whether the internal rechargeable batteries are replaceable? The Tacktick website dodges the question, and merely says "The batteries are not considered to limit the life of the instruments."
can't say that I agree. My only experience with them was to try to get some info from them about Micronet stuff when it first came out. Their distributor didn't answer emails so I called TackTick direclty and they were downright rude. Needless to say I spent my money elsewhere and was very glad that I did so.
I do know they don't like charging under artificial light, (and before you say " who sails indooors?"), 10 days inside at the London boatshow with no daylight and the demo units were suffering towards the end! If you take them home, charge them on the window sill.
Tacktick has experience massive growth in recent times and has recently "re-arranged" all of its distribution network. The introduction of MicroNet moved Tacktick from Dinghy's to Cruising yachts soa distributor with more indept electronics knowledge was required. Even as an established dealer, I have noticed a difference.
The point on the contact page, was "product registration, - 5yr warranty"
Until recently I thought that lithium ion batteries were the 'perfect' battery, with no memory effect, and ability to charge at any time without loss of capacity. After doing some google searching and reading I discovered that at average temperatures lithium cells can lose up to 20% of their capacity each year after manufacture.
I put this to Tacktick at LBS, as I don't want to buy a fully sealed instrument which has a dead battery in 5 years - I was told all the units produced from the beginning of this year will be modified to address this issue.
I bought a Micronet system when they first came out. The only problem that I experienced was with the LCD missing parts of characters intermittently.
I telephoned Tacktick, who were extremely helpful, they supplied a replacement unit & offered support on other parts of the system that I had queries on. Their product & service are excellent & I will purchase from them again, as the need arrises.
I replaced the batteries on my old Race Master. Tacktick were very helpful when I called and told me where I could get hold of some batteries. They would not supply me any directly as they did not recommend replacement.
The job took me a long time but it didn't cure the problem and the thing still did not work.
The guys at Tacktick did say to me that just because it didn't work it didn't mean the batteries are flat.
The product worked for four years and the support was great even though it didn't get the thing working again. I'm looking at the Micronet stuff now, I'm told the technology has improved. Maybe the Race Master has just had its day.
Thanks for the replies. When I actually bothered to read the (downloaded) manual properly I found out the batteries were fine. The display reads bat for about 5 seconds on powering up the bargraph on the left reads the charge level a fact I hadn't realised. The manual doesn't really explain that part of the operation of the unit very well in fairness.
Anyway a public whipping in the forum for me but hope that wasn't a complete waste of time for eveyone.
Hello:
I can replace the batteries in the older white TackTick Race Master units. E-Mail me at tpcook@videoautomation.com for more information. We use the original batteries so the life will be an additional 5-10 years. We can also change out the batteries in any of the TackTick Units
Thanks
TpCook
