Is it OK and easy to connect Quicksilver (Mercury) tachs, used with mercury engines 90hp, to 85hp Yamaha engines?

Same(ish) type and year? Twostroke, fourstroke, EFI, loom layout..?
If only for occasional checking (eg. for prop testing) I'd look into the universal 'point 'n shoot' laser readers. Inexpensive and need no installation.

The tachs are installed in the dash.
Both the Mercury's and the Yamaha's are two stroke.
It would be nice to synchronise them with the tachs, rather than doing it by sound.
