tachometers

Can anyone suggest how I may test a tachometer which is attatched to a Mariner 50hp 3 cyl. 2 stroke. The indicator is stuck at 600 so it could be siezed, but I'm wondering if anything relevant can be measured with a multimeter at the engine or instrument terminals. Thanks.

I had this with a tacho i had. The engine was a mariner too. It will be the tacho as it gets its signal from the flywheel magneto. Am i right in thinking that the tacho plugs into the throttle/starter control box with a plug into the front. its worth giving this a clean from time to time as the connections are'nt that great. Theres not an awful lot to check as most of the leccy side is taken care of with the sead unit on the engine.

The wires emerge from a loom, so its difficult to trace their origin. The instrument has screw down terminals. Sounds different to what you have/had. Thanks for the post.

If the wire colurs are purple-signal from alt, black- neg gray-not used red-live, it probably is a later type. Not normaly a problem with the engine, I went through 4 tachos, its the bouncing around that kills them, or so I am told.
