I've have been using an Asus Memo Pad 7 (HD 1920 x 1200 screen) for the last few years running Marine Navigator App with UK Admiralty raster charts from Visit my Harbour. The functions of Marine navigator are limited but I quite liked the raster charts. Recently, I've found the scrolling between charts has got much worse and the orientation has gone a bit haywire but in any case the tablet has now got afflicted by malware and Google Play is inoperable. As I don't have any other uses for a tablet i can't justify the cost of the cellular version of an iPad, even a refurb one, so I was looking for a cheap (i.e. preferably not more than £150) Android replacement, but this time to run Navionics HD, which I've been quite impressed with on other peoples machines. I also decided I wanted a 10" rather than a 7" screen.

I picked up a Huawei MediaPad3 10 from Argos the other day as it looked about right but a German review indicates a) the recharging speed and battery life is substandard and even more seriously, the 1280 x 800 resolution spread over a larger screen is somewhat short of HD - will Navionics HD work on this?

As I can return this unopened I am inclined to do so - I have found a 2016 spec Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.1 for only £30 more with genuine HD resolution and better battery life

Any tablet experts out there who can advise?

Not remotely a tablet expert but I have a Tab A 10.1 and its seems to work well: I only use it for previewing photos via QDSLR app and wifi. A quirky and buggy program but much better than Nikon's own software, which is genuine rubbish. Have not used it for charts: boat has two plotters.

What's the cheapest iPad refurbed you can find nowadays? If you look for astandard iPad 2 with a lower capacity memory is it that much more than other tabs?
What exactly is a refurb? I can't imagine anything you can do to an iPad other than clean the screen and set it back to default factory settings.

I've got an iPad 1 which is still going, but no updates of course. Several other tablets have come and gone, but recently bought t3 10 and so far very pleased, at £119 from Asda.
None work in the sunlight of course. Got an xplore c3 now long in the tooth, which did, but backlight given up the ghost.

It makes a refreshing change to read of someone in the UK complaining of, too much, sunlight :)

I've got a Samsung Tab E which replaced a Hudl after it packed up. Tesco gave me a full refund on the Hudl which funded the Samsung. As others have said, it is solidly built and works well with Navionics. Usual caveats relating to daylight viewing and battery life not brilliant.
Is there a tablet with a plotter quality screen.

The tablet is well below current hardware specs but apart from the scrolling and malware it sounds like it did a good job for you. Why not do a hardware reset - it will be like new albeit with a tired battery and costs you nothing.

Since posting this I've managed to restore Google Play - not sure how. I thought doing a hardware reset loses all your data. I may spring for the Samsung anyway which is on special offer from one outlet for £165 as I think 10"works a lot better.

I have a 3 yo Asus, on which i was able to do a hardware reset/ update which bought it back to like new operation. Yes it does delete everything, but it should be possible to back up stuff you want to keep. The risk being that you re-install the malware that caused the problem, and of course as with any firmware update, there is some risk that it can go irretrievably wrong. OTOH if the battery life is going down, then replacement is the better option.

Interesting re the Samsung as at that price might be worth a look even with an exiting old iPad Is there waterproofing case you would buy for it if you had it at the helm ?
