T40 Drive broke

Loss of oil or poor quality oil or emulsified oil, poor servicing , the boat was in the med prior to you buying it .

I was waiting for you to come in on that .

Does the oil ,the correct oil cool as well as lub the top gear ?

As the level drops or the water concentration increases the heat boils off the water and the gear is left high and literally dry .In therory VP oil supposed to have additives ,special VP unique formula to prevent the water fully evaporating off thus at least in some way keeping the level all be it emulsified liquid high enough for a while to survive to the next oil change service .
Not wanting to start another correct ( and expensive ) . vP oil verses cheapo gear oil debate .

It’s not worn ,ie noisey or rattled ,Its overheated and heat cycles have made it brittle .Or because it’s never been disassembled something, guess shim ? Has worked loose as well .
So now one brittle gear wheel is knocking about against the other two in not quite the correct alignment and getting brittle with very hr run , with an inevitable conclusion .

I have an offer in on a 2001 T40 at the moment; not heard of this before despite having had a T34 before my F43 which had KAD300's/DPGs.

Is this a common defect/fault? Anyone heard of this on other DPGs of that age other than those above?

Rotten luck though for the OP but at least once both drives are overhauled you should get many years trouble free, hopefully!

I had one drive go on a Targa 40 ( under water object - insurance claim). When I sold it the new owner had one go bang a few weeks later. The boat is still in Cala Dor and was lifted the other week when i walked past it - leg off- now back in water. Dont know what happened but assume bang. So he had 2 legs go in 4 or so years.

I am not sure that it is "common" but based on a sample of one boat which fortunately I did not have to pay for the repairs on then I would say it is not that rare!

Mine had bellows done every 2 years ( was terrified it would sink), oil changes etc so to the best of my knowledge were correctly maintained and had no apparent issues during their time with me.

You have a lot of power going through several universal joints and I suspect it does not take much for things to have slight play that then result in a catastrophic failure.

The new legs are as I understand ballpark £5k, prob less if coastal rides etc can supply.

Thanks, that's a useful steer, I will be scrutinising the recent leg service documentation to see if they opened them up of just did bellows. If the latter, unless there is any previous noise, vibration of other issues then it would be impossible to know the condition of the pinion/gear which is a concern, perhaps some others may come forward.

PETEM - Your inbox is full. I have responded to your PM....!

Sorry to OP for any thread drift…..

I had a 2001 T40 untill recently. I believe they had DPE drives which my drive engineer regarded as one of the most reliable. Just down skimp on oil, anodes and bellows. Expect clutch cones around 800-1000 hours. Had 3 DP or DPE boats over 20 years without any major drama's like this so don't be too worried.

Just make sure on survey you have a marine engineer to look at the drives and oil and condition. And a solid history. IMHO any outdrive not pristinely serviced and well kept can go boom.

right bit of update :encouragement:

Used the sunny weather during week while was waiting for parts.. Gave her clean up and antifoul .. also new anodes .. bellows . oil in both drives etc

going back in water in a couple hours time . shame about the weather. but i think i go up to east cowes marina and stay there until gap in weather to head back to haslar..

oil from other drive . very clean so they obv did service them like they said.

im wondering if this problem was related to the clutch cone? im no expert so what do you think?

i started a thread few months back saying was having few problems. was taking bit longer to engage forward / reverse the normal 1 second delay..

maybe it engaged (late) and revs was slightly higher then thats what sheared the teeth? if that makes sense

Take a look at the gears in those photos.
The gear on one side is still oily.
The top gear is dry and rusty.
If the oil level was too low, that would explain a lot.

Also that oil looks to be a bit green to be the standard Volvo gear oil - looks like something else. What was on the service invoice?

yeah i thinks its all gone bit rusty as was salt water all over where casing split and ive left it outside to the elements..

will check invoice when get home :encouragement:

Doesn't have to be the Volvo stuff, but it should be the right spec.

Looking at the pix. There is rust and corrosion . It should be absolutely pristine in there. My outdrives were 30 years old and not a trace of any corrosion or rust. IMHO.Water has been in there at some point and left long enough to cause that pitting . As to if it caused the failure no idea.. Doubt there was enough time between the casing cracking and dismantling for that amount of corrosion to appear ? Now wondering if previous owner has discovered water has got in, decided on quick service and moved boat on ?

Anyone know why the clutch cone would be this bad.. literally all in bits both sides and very deep chunks missing . i still think this might of been the cause of the problem but interested to know your opinions
