I live near the NE shore of a creek inhabited by a number of moorings. In the morning after a big blow I have a look along the shore to see whose mooring let go and maybe give a hand to restore the status quo.

I always have a look at the casualties to see what caused them to let go.

Rarely there is a big hole in the foredeck where the main cleat used to be.

Much more frequently there is a length of chain hanging from the bow whose links get thinner and thinner until the last one which has parted.

In most of these cases there are several feet of chain made of links worn down to about 1mm thick.

How anyone can use a mooring in that state for what must be years without checking really beats me.

Yep. Mine is on a swinging mooring, 12 months in commission if I choose (though she is out of the water this winter).

Navigators and General.

Not quite the cheapest cover but a very good policy.

Mine is with DRL. No questions asked about the swinging mooring, other than where it is. I do know that almost all companies will not give insurance to boats east of Southend pier on the moorings for instance, so it may well be location related.

I pay about 10%extra with St Margarets since I changed to a swinging mooring.

Also my excess is increased during the winter October to March from £100 To £250.

Boats going back in on Thursday after a 4 week tidy up ashore.I get depressed if I cant get a sailing fix in the winter.

My boat is insured by Basic Boat Liability and they have changed their policy wording, one of the exclusions is that they will not cover damage resulting from the failure of a swinging mooring unless it has been professionally laid and maintained. This is a pain as I laid the mooring and check it twice a year (I can walk out to it on LW springs March and October).
