Swinging mooring

"Not to be used for mooring - only fit for anchoring"

What absolute rubbish! The stress under anchor can just as easily be as great as when moored. It all depends on the weather and conditions at the time. My anemometer has recorded a higher wind at anchor (74knots) than it ever has in over 20 years on a mooring.

If your bow roller collapsed, merely under load, it was certainly not fit for purpose

Re SS in moorings. Our mooring authority (State government) insist on the use of their supplied buoy. It has a SS shaft up the middle with swivel built in.
When you attach a chain to the SS ring on the bottom of the buoy the shackle fizzes in about one year. It is horrible. Further more it was found that the SS shaft would fail allowing the boat to depart. The newer buoys did not have the ring on top so the only connection had to be at the bottom to absolve the authority from blame.
I was given a lot of reputedly SS chain so I have made the mooring almost entirely of SS so no real problems yet. It is massively over sized ie 10mm shackles for a 1 tonne boat. I fabricated a swivel to go under the buoy again of 10mm bolts and heavy plate. So far wear is very little.
I swim around it a lot so inspect it often.
But yes SS and GI don't go well together. olewill

Many thanks for the responses.

The real essence of my question was around the use of the bow roller for guiding the pendant on board, but I did not want to influence the answers.

On my yacht (37') she has been attached to the bouy by chain as suggested over the bow roller. However the bow roller has collapsed and the dealer is suggesting that it should not have been used for mooring as it is only fit for anchoring. Personally I find this a strange suggestion and will argue that fitting was not fit for purpose.

Go for his jugular for such a stupid remark !! I have to say though that many boats have 'piddly' fitting at bow ! I'm a great believe in the older style with vertical tang to take forestay loads and capping / flat plate to absorb chain loads. Some roller pins are pitifully small .....

When my Snapdragon stemhead fitting was damaged stuffing the L/boat up the jacksy - I designed and had my own fitting made / replacing the old. For the above reason - vertical tang, large plate and good size pin. With added locking pin above roller. But I never used a pin above the chain. Always a light lashing.
