I've just watched Swallows & Amazons on TV. How irresponsible!
Surely everyone knows that kids can only be transported strapped into 4WDs.
They were also allowed out in uncertified boats without qualified instructors and no lifejackets, immersion suits, harnesses, helmets, epirbs or any safety gear.
They appeared to lack any designer labels on their clothes and no sign of any magazines such as What Pirate To guide them.
Most unbelievable, a policeman came out to investigate a burglary.
How did that generation manage to survive?

It is a sad commentary on modern life that todays children would not be allowed to do a tenth of that generations activities, and any parent that tried to allow it would almost certainly be prosecuted for not looking after their children - have we all gone barking mad, or am I the only one that is totally insame /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif

It really is crazy! I started sailing at the age of 10 before I could swim properly - now days my parents would probably be prosecuted. I'm still sailing almost 60 years later. My sailing has improved and I can now swim.
It didn't arise for my kids as they all learnt to swim beofre they learnt to sail.

PS Is the film worth watching?

The film's fairly faithful to the book, but somehow rather worthy and dull - they weren't able to recapture the sense of the adventure and fun of being on the water that Ransome achieved.

Read the books again, instead, would be my advice!

i think i would be linched by a baying vigalante mob for my repeated abandonment ashore(with no money so he can't get back to the boat in water taxi) of my allocated child so i could sleep!

I think I heard somewhere this film can't be shown in the USA because of lack of statutory safety gear, etc etc.

Wasn't much better in the 60's when I started to sail my Cadet by myself or with an even younger crew. Parents waved so I waved back and sailed even further out into the wild seas off Whitstable .... Always came back though, mainly through hunger to the sandwich making machine (mum). When the boom tried to take my head off it was my own fault for not ducking quickly enough. And now; who do we sue; parents, manufactures, trainers or should it be ourselves .....

those were the days

Fancy calling someone Titty now or even worse Roger the Boy- reckon old Arthur would have been suspected of phaediophahelialala if he'd been around now.
