I have an older Suzuki 2 two stroke o/b. I have never filled it with oil because I do not know where to fill it or whether it needs oil? Seems bit of a daft question, but there you go. has anyone any ideas?

Thanks

A 2-stroke engine is lubricated by the oil mixed in the fuel. The mix is sucked into the crankcase and then into the engine so it coats everything with a fine oil mist. However, the gearbox does need separate lubrication, I suggest you Google for a downloadable user manual for your particular model to check the oil/petrol mix ratio and the grade of oil required for the gearbox.

As Rob2 says the engine should be run a petrol/oil mix.
I'd suggest , in the absence of any definite info, that you use a 50:1 mix. That's 50 parts petrol to 1 part oil, (20 mls of oil in a litre of petrol)
Use ordinary unleaded petrol and an a 2 stroke outboard engine oil that conforms to TCW3 specification.

The gear case should be filled with an outboard engine gear oil of around 80W90 viscosity.

The diagram on THIS PAGE shows a typical Suzuki DT2 gear box. The part # 22 is the oil drain screw and #31 is the level screw.

Remove both and allow the old oil to drain.

Refill via the drain hole using a squeezable bottle or a pump until oil flows from the level screw. Replace the level screw , remove the bottle or pump and replace the drain screw.
It is recommended that new sealing washers are used on the two screws.

The old oil should drain clear and bright. If it is milky or if there is water present it indicates that either the prop-shaft seal or the vertical drive shaft seal is leaking and should be replaced.

Thanks for your input. I knew about 2 stroke etc as I cut my teeth on a BSA Bantam. I was sure there was a need for oil in the Suzuki gearbox but the diagram explains all.

Thanks again
