Suspicious substance in the Solent

As it was such a nice day I decided I'd run out of the Hamble and go and have a look at the Harry S Truman lying at anchor in Stokes Bay. What a big B*****D!!! The Harbour Police were keeping folks away but if you got any closer you could only see gray bits! The deck was lined with aircraft and the Solent cruise ships were ferrying the crew ashore. The line streatched right back into the flight hanger. I think Pompey is going to a little crowded over the next few days.
There are 5000 crew aboard! Anyway after a cirmcumnavigation of the ship, I decided to head up to the Folly for a pint and some lunch. Duly fortified, I head back to the Hamble/forums/images/icons/smile.gif - now this is where it gets interesting. From the entrance to Southampton Water there is this brown sludge everywhere. In the Hamble its now like a brown soup floating all around the entrance and when I popped into Warsash Marine to refuel the whole marina was full of it. When I asked where it had come from it was suggested that it had only appeared in the last 24 hours - since the arrival of the carrier. Now question, 5000 people on board, do they have a big holding tank? If not, while the stuff does not actually smell, it looks highly suspicious /forums/images/icons/frown.gif
As the ship is there for week, I would suggest those who go out be careful what they touch. Had to bring my fender socks home for washing, and that was from just mooring up at the fuel berth!

If they are dumping it on our doorstep - it's almost as bad as friendly fire! Its very unpleasant and is making a hell of a mess of the waterline. I think I'll ask the Environment Agency what it is!

That has been given as an alternative. But in my 10 years of boating in the Solent I've never seen it as bad. Mind you , I can't remember "seeing" anything like it durring the D Day celebrations when there were many more ships at anchor in the Solent, including the George Washington, another US carrier.

Hm. Discharging the tanks only makes the immediate area at the discharge pipe brownish and effluent soon dissipates. I mean, it doesn't float about like a monstrous slick, nor does it ever get rolled about and reformed into a giant turd, but breaks up quickly. Unless they been eating crude oil with much great viscosity and surface tension.

Anway, even if they do pump their tanks, i wd have though there will be a lot more sophisticated treament first, secretive lurking about and all that, otherwise the ruskies could say eyup, blue bog paper and (sniff) they've been eating fish again soo they were last in this position on Friday after lunch.

holding tank calcs

Hmm. 5000 people say. Eating US junk food, following massive supply ship deliveries of donuts and hamburgers now the war is over. Say 10lbs of crap each week, per capita. And the captain (a Squaddie 59 sailor) decided not to empty the tank daily, so as to weigh the boat down and get more speed for long trip back from the Gulf, say 2 weeks. That's 45 tons.

Now, if tcm is right in his theory, and some of the crew have accidentally ingested a bit of crude oil, all this will coalesce into one massive turd. That could be a problem couldn't it?

Ideal opportunity for Nick and joanne to empty their couple of tons and not get blamed imho.

All the above to be checked with haydn in case any risk of explosion

perhaps if you put your finger in and lick it you will get a clue, I did that with my bilge and it tasted salty so guessed it was sea water. Could you taste that stuff for us and see if it tastes of doughnuts, pizza, burgers, pop corn or whatever and let us know /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Cheers,

As a person with such a discerning palate you would seem to be more qualified than I for such a task. I'm sure it will still be around when you make your merry way to Mercury at the weekend./forums/images/icons/wink.gif
