Despite a little lost in translation I'm thinking that's a "yes" on the validity.

I too would be interested to know how they might have known you're a boat owner and how using your email address for this invitation is within the limits of what they say they intended to use your address for.

My understanding is that an MX record isn't essential for incoming mail, even if it's usual.

As you say, mx or a records not required if you don't need to send mail to an address and the reply-to: in the headers DJE just posted show that replies are to a different address. The sending domain does have the spf/dkim/dmarc txt records though for attesting to validity

I thought I could safely leave you to check the validity of the spf/dkim/dmarc stuff! (I've only ever used spf) And I thought of you when I saw that it was from notifications.service.gov.uk but reply-to digital.homeoffice.gov.uk. But I'm still pretty sure that you can mail to a domain that doesn't have an MX record; defaults back to the IP of the target host, as per RFC5321. Normally only true of small private domains nowadays, but I think I've seen it from one of the commercial email providers

True, hence covering my back by saying "mx or a" (although I neglected the aaaa option) ;-). They clearly don't receive mail there, so nothing needed.

The Brexit regime are illiterate. They can neither spell nor use correct syntax.

But they can order us around:

Isn't 'regime' singular? So it should be 'The Brexit regime is illiterate'.

Illiteracy is, unfortunately, not confined to the 'regime' (as you call it). But possibly we are not seeing illiteracy but just a slip of the pen - on your part as well as on that of the 'regime'. ;)

It is absoloutly genuine. I was part of the bre-beta trial. This is a further extension of it. It is very easy to use but they have paid no attention to my previous comments and are still asking you to submit arrival time in hours and minutes before you depart from foreign shores. The other issue is it is a webpage and not and most lots of people have access to mobile devices but only some have computers and fewer will have a wifi-signal.

Mostly it is quite begin it somply wants to record your departure and arrival points and times and if you get it wrong you can go back and change it after arrival. I am not sure that many would be bothered to do so, it is quite naive of them to think that people will change the report after arrival. I expect most will report their intended departure once the rules are in force.

No slip of the pen. I set out to convey that the Brexit and Sleaze Party does not think and act with one mind like the Borg Collective, but is, perhaps fatally, divided against itself.

Is this the one they told the RYA would be linked to customs, immigration and the coastguard radar and AIS system?

Having cruised, lived and travelled in various countries in my youth that had recently undergone political 'upheavals' and had tendencies towards failures of the state/governance - typos and errors on official paperwork was par for the course. We mostly ignored them (the paperwork that is, not the typos!) and carried on regardless. I'd imagine most will do the same here.

IIRC up until a few years ago the Cambodian landing card/arrival form featured some comedy typos.

Not to cast aspersions on those countries by comparing them, of course.

I usually check what a link points to by hovering my mouse over it in so that the details pop up and these all do what they say. But the email address doesn't match the format specified on the Home Office page about how to spot fraud! I was also trying to avoid copying live links into my posts in case somebody else clicked them. I hadn't heard of the use of unicode characters before - must watch out for that one. Bottom of the email looks like this:

Given that the law changes on a daily basis at the moment I consider it entirely unreasonable to expect 66M people to read the news every day in order to comply. If a deal gets signed today we'll all need to learn 2000 pages by new year so I agree - act reasonably and be polite but try not to dwell too much on their nonsense or you'll have no time for sailing.

I assume this service is designed to let you self flag for a VAT doc check on your way home? Can't see many other reasons they'd be interested...

According to the RYA Brexit seminar, it's designed to do everything, log arrival, list the crew for immigration, declare customs, report everyone healthy, cross check with coastguard radar...

Were the typos in Cambodian or in English?
Exactly...! In English. I never got my head around the Khmer script, but sure that part was word perfect. And now they've got a fully functional e-visa system anyway! Shame it isn't really a 'yacht friendly' destination in terms of fees/clearances. The coastline is beautiful and would offer some fantastic cruising grounds.

Maybe our new form was the work of the recently-recruited oddballs, weirdos and misfits with unusual skills, etc.? At least they tasked the more competent ones with ordering portaloos for lorry drivers in Kent. Oh, wait...!

Let's be realistic here, it's designed to remove responsibility and accountability for the border control. Either you register and they flag you for a check, or you register and they flag you for no checks, either way they have "proof" that they did their jobs and statistics to show the newspapers that they did their jobs. In a year we'll see a headline with something like "10,000 yachts crossed the channel and no illegal entry was found! Look what great control we have over our sovereign borders!". Meanwhile despite the different goalposts, illegal immigration and smuggling will continue either on boats that don't register or on boats that do register pending confirmation of how the new system works.

Anybody else seen this by email? The domain names don't look right although they go to official-looking sites.

This refers to the trial of beta e-borders reporting system. At least some of those people invited participated in a survey conducted by the Home Office some months ago. My interview did not auger well because the software the Home Office chose to use was not compatible with the software on my Mac.

So far I have made four attempts to make trial reports and have failed on all four occasions. On three of those occasions the system has refuse to acknowledge that the port or anchorage I am departing from exists, and the fourth, because of change of plans en-route, has not allowed me to amend the original report that I submitted. If it was for real the Home Office would be under the impression that I'm in Nieuwpoort, when in fact I'm anchored up in the Swale. So far I give it 0/10.

Thanks all. I vaguely remember doing the survey. Think I'll have a play with the reporting system and see how it goes.

After several attempts I have concluded that it is not possible to update a submitted report if that attempt is after the originally submitted arrival time (see attached screenshot.) If this was for real, the Home Office would think I'm Nieuwpoort, when I know that I'm anchored in the Swale.

I disagree that it is easy to fill in; it refuses to recognise anchorages, marinas, and ports (not all, but most of the ones I have tried) and I've managed to submit a solo voyage with two skippers! So far I give it 0/10.
