I'm looking for a surveyor to carry out a pre-purchase survey on a sea-going motor boat for me at Newark-on-Trent marina.

Does anyone have any recmmendations please?

Many thanks

Obviously be aware that the location of the boat means you are extremely limited in terms of what's possible to inspect mechanically. If you are thinking of taking the boat out to sea your first journey will be the first time the boat has been opened up properly and all the mechanicals put under load for some time, possibly for ever. Not sure I'd want to take that risk. What happens when you discover the engines overheat?

You may end up having to solve a load of problems which materialise that have laid dormant whilst the boat pottered around rivers under 5% load.

At least with a boat based on the coast there's a chance it's been used in anger on a regular basis, if it's a known boat on here all the better. You can also give it a proper sea trial.

If you intend to keep it on a river then less of an issue.

Henry :)

Thanks to henryf and steve930. Very good advice. I'm a pretty cautious sailor so my plan would be to relocate her by road and then leave her ashore over the winter in my home marina whilst I fettle various things to my liking. I would then be able to do a series of work-up cruises in the spring.

Of course the upside is that the engines should have had a relatively easy life thus far!

As far as a sea trial is concerned, I acknowledge the risks doing on a river but I would likely commission a specialist engine survey before purchasing anyway.

Some test runs are possible at certain places on the Trent but not exactly a sea trial. Ian Lumley included such a test for his survey of my present boat.

Then again a friend did a sea trial himself on a coastal boat but still had overheating issues which developed later. Thankfully the fault has been resolved at modest cost
