I had an extensive insurance survey done when I bought my boat 3 years ago, cost just over £500. My insurance is due and they have in the clause if boat is over 20 years old then I need a new survey if last one was 3 years or more. My boat is a wooden saling boat and I have no concerns about another survey being done. The questions I have are for insurance purposes will it need to be so extensive and should it be costing in the region of £500!!
Thanks

Hi There,
regarding surveys for insurance on timber. Generally timber is a bit more expensive to survey, but if you are being asked for a survey every three years, this seems a bit excessive so consider changing, I also have timber and only have to renew every 5 years, with some insurers I carry out work for, every ten years. Cost does depend on boat length but I am unaware of the size of your boat, if she is below 30 ft, £500 sounds excessive. PM me for further details and insurers if that would help.

You might see what the same surveyor would charge for a re-survey. Last time this happened to me, I had a reduced charge because the boat was know to the surveyor and certain things didn't have to be done from scratch.

Suggest you get from the insurer a list of key items to be surveyed, and ask the previous surveyor to check just those.

Also agree with other posts that 3 years is excessive unless items shown up in the last survey merit a more frequent check. Is this the case?

Finally, do look at other insurers - it's a fluid market. And consider the excess you are prepared to carry - this could help with the cost of cover.

I've had (old) boats insured with Eagle Star/ Navigators and General since the 70's and never been asked to have a survey. maybe the overall costs involved are worth considering when choosing which policy to go with in the first place.
