I believe a 48m superyacht has grounded on rox at corsica this morning. People ok, in lifersafts, but oil on beaches. Can't get any more info at this point. Anyone local? Heard anything? Any pictures anyone?

Land's End I think

Lands End will not be on Lloyds etc yet. Only happened few hours ago. This is all unconfirmed report stuff - from a yacht crew informal text message network kinda thing.

Yes she is (still is, I hope) a beautiful classic yacht

I didn't look at the other thread (the heading didn't say what the thread was about so I passed on it!)

[Roman Abramovitch's plans to cruise the Maltese isles, with his family, before heading to Sardinia on his 377 foot yacht Pelorus, were thwarted when the yachts tanks were filled by contaminated diesel.

No serious damage was done, because the yacht's sophistocated monitoring systems detected the contamination, but it meant that a clean up was needed, so the billionaire had to change his holiday plans. His wife and family flew straight to Sardinia, to be joined later by Abramovitch and then Pelorus.

This incident follows soon after the opening of a High Court case in which Pelorus' interior designers are suing for non-payment of design fees of around £3/4, for changes made during an interior refit. Both Abramovitch's representatives and designer Terence Disdale have declined to make any comment about the case.

SWMBO has just sent some fancy lab equipment ( from her companys loan dept ) to sample / test the fuel /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How come you're always first with the news of a superyacht sinking or are you hoping to become MBM's superyacht correspondent? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Can't reveal sources mike :-). Mostly yacht crew. Hang out in crew bars and suddenly you have 30 yacht crew mates. It's a nice social life down there :-).

Actually there has been another event (separate from the Land's End case) yesterday I think. Much more tragic. Not yet appropriate to report publicly.

Tragic death Sardinia

No not that one. It has now hit the press (Evening Standard, last night and Metro this morning) so can mention. The Ciardi family (he's an investment banker in London) had chartered a large yacht. Mrs Ciardi was swimming, in Cala di Volpe, by Porto Cervo in NE Sardinia, day before yesterday. As she swam she was run over by a Wally tender and very badly injured. They got her ashore but she died from head injuries just as the chopper was arriving, with her three children there. Utterly tragic accident. Much of the specifics and detail of whose boat was whose is incorrect in the Evening Standard/Metro report, but the basic story is true. Tragic.

Re: Tragic death Sardinia

Very tragic and a danger we all need to be careful of when swimming off our boats.
I have a long line with my fenders tied at different points floating off my stern, this not only prevents boats coming too close but also gives swimmers something to hold when they get tired.

Yup we do the same, or maybe let the donut drift out on a long line to make a safe zone.

In this case the victim was making a long swim between 2 anchored 35m ish charter boats. A line of fenders or whatever wouldn't have protected her. The Wally (which was tender to a quite separate yacht) was reportedly going fast, and I'd guess its helmsman's immediate frontal visibility isn't great becuase such a long foredeck. The lesson seems to be that when swimming far from your ship, beyond a floating-toy guardzone, you need a crew person guarding you with a tender, at least in a busy anchorage (as this one was). And when driving a tender in an anchorage you need to be 200% vigilant about swimmers.
