Does anyone have any experience of the Sunsail outfit in Turkey. A friend of mine wants to go/take their kids to one of their holiday camps + sailing in dinghies.

Are they any good?

I thought that Sunsail got thrown out of Turkey a few years ago for breaking local employment laws. Are they back?
The Greek clubs are fantastic.

Nielson have a newish base near Marmaris which gets good reports, they do water sports and I think they have dinghies, and they also do flotilla and bareboat sailing. I met a family on one of their yachts last year who had done a week at the base followed by a week on a yacht, and said that it was a great holiday.

That one (Adakoy) is very nice if you like a small quiet place.
For a family with kids wanting it a bit more lively, with a good big sailing area, and a really nice local town, the Neilson at Phokaia is great.

When we were sailing in Turkey last year we met a family in Marmaris who had escaped from Adakoy. Apparently, it's very isolated there and if you fancy having a walk, or eating out somewhere you're stuffed.

I've had a number of holidays with Neilson and found them to be very good. I've also been with Sunsail with no complaints.

Just booked again with Neilson in Greece ( yachts)

As I said, Adakoy is quiet. If you want to go into Marmaris it's a 10 minute ferry. You can walk to Marmaris Marina - not the one in the town - there's a bar and restaurant there for a change, quite a stiff walk.
I really like it but it wouldn't suit everyone. Nowhere does!

I have just had an awful experience with Sunsail. They didn't tell us about a Navtex notice announcing naval exercises that closed down our sailing area in Turkey for 2 days out of our 6-day charter. The yacht also had several serious faults.

We had a problem with a Sunsail yacht many years ago which meant we had to return to Base and we lost 2 days of our holiday. After an exchange of letters Sunsail gave us a £1000 refund which I was very happy with so used them again many times after that.

Good to hear of the positive outcome of your exchange of letters with Sunsail, Richard. Right now they are being very defensive, which is not very clever, because we aren't about to give up and they will loose a good customer if they don't come to their senses.

Sunsail only have the Vounaki beach club in Greece nowadays. We went to one of the Turkish clubs back in the day (Marverde) and it was really good.

Sunsail left Vounaki end of last season and Neilson have taken over, actually I'm off there tomorrow on a two week bareboat charter. Had many holidays with Neilson and highly recommend

Sunsail no longer have even Vounaki Club/marina base. All the Ionian boats are based at Levkas marina. All 120 or so on one long pontoon!!!!
Vounaki is now in the hands of Neilsons.
Sadly Sunsail don't have any clubs left.
We have had many holidays, both club and charter with Sunsail all over the world and always found them 100%.
Just returned from a 2 week charter from Levkas, not much wind but service and boat spot on.

We were very loyal to Sunsail and had many wonderful holidays in Greece and Turkey, both beach club and flotilla.
Sadly, our last Sunsail holiday was at Vounaki in 2012 ...

Their contact centre was hopelessly poor in 2013 (soon to move to south London)
We booked with Neilson and can report we had a great holiday in 2014
Bonus: We didn't pay to fill the tank at the end of the holiday (unlike the line of Sunsail boats at Gocek)
We are Neilson flotilla sailing again at the end of August

I would be interested to hear from anyone that has been to Vounaki with Sunsail and with Neilson this year

Hi Michael, I’m very sorry to hear you were unhappy with your Sunsail charter. I’ve just caught up with Daniela in our customer services team, who has been looking into this with our Turkey base for you. She’ll be in touch soon and I hope we can get this resolved. Kind regards, Claire (Sunsail)

I'm really sorry to hear about the demise of the Sunsail Clubs. We had some of our best holidays when our children were younger doing Club/Flotilla holidays in the Med and Antigua. The flotilla week and the beach club week made an excellent combination, and kept the children active and involved. The beach team were always friendly and enthusiastic, and the various craft seemed in good condition. I will never forget seeing my 10 year old daughter, who had never sailed before, happily sailing past me in charge of an Optomist dinghy and looking as though she had been doing it all her life.

The kids are now adults, and starting families of their own, so I hope someone will resurrect the concept in time for my grandchildren to enjoy it.

Sunsail's pontoon at Levkas, Greek Ionian.
Most of their 120 (ish) boats are on this one pontoon.
The organisation is excellent, our boat was spotless and fault free.
