Sunsail in the Solent

Priceless; I'll print that one and frame it to hang in the loo ! :)

?

Is there a joke I've missed?

Arguably it was a little pedantic of him, but Awol was simply pointing out that only the racing rules have a concept of "right of way". The colregs do not.

Actually - it's not that pedantic. "Right of Way" has a lot of baggage around it as a concept that Stand-On doesn't. (Although as RoW is a pet hate of mine I might be over sensitive on it Pete!!)

I have theoretically had right of way, but had to take quite drastic action to avoid ' Corporate Races '

Don't forget though that racers will usually accept a much closer CPA than a cruiser will so no guarantee that he wouldn't have avoided you - just says that your tolerance to proximity is lower than his.

What he should have done though is acknowledged your existence and indicated he was going to avoid you. Of course avoiding an A22 in a normal boat is much like a glacier avoiding a bullet.

No, I think Right of Way is the correct term for a second centred person to use.

From PBO a long time ago;

" Here lie the bones of Mike O'Day,

who died maintaining his Right Of Way

He was right, dead right, as he sailed along,

but now he's as dead as if he'd been wrong "

So my years in racing dinghies, cruiser racing in the A22 and other boats mean nothing if I get the yell from Sunsail Jamie with highlights in his hair " We're racing " then .

So, are you saying if you are racing, you can ignore colregs, or have I misunderstood you?

You've misunderstood.

Awol was being very correct, if slightly pedantic.

The phrase "Right of Way" does not appear in the COLREGS. You are only Stand on - and there is a difference.

However, under RRS you can in fact be "Right of Way Boat". Though obviously only with other boats who are racing.

No, quite the opposite. Colregs trump racing rules when dealing with a non-racing boat - not surprisingly since the former are the law of the land (Merchant Shipping (distress signals and prevention of collisions) Regulations 1996) and the latter are simply an agreement between some people participating in a sport.

However, colregs do not give anybody the right of way. They do sometimes give a vessel an obligation to stand on.

Pete

A "little" pedantic? I'm not trying hard enough, obviously. It was dinned into me that the IRPCS allocates responsibilities and does not bestow any "rights". The sloppy or ignorant use of RoW by such an experienced, skilled, accomplished sailor just grates on my sensibilities; that he finds his error less than heinous is just sad.

With that much racing experience you must've been fully aware of the concepts of "right of way", "keep clear", "stand on" and "give way" and when they apply before you read AWOL's post then.

Before we get stuck on the Colregs again, can we go back to lpdsn's suggestion on post #49 that we should hold a manoeuvring match? I wonder if Sunsail could be persuaded to make a couple of their finest F40s available for the showdown?

Certainly looked like a prang with a capital P. But no-one seriously hurt and I bet you both boats will be back in the fleet before long. And two crews will have added an experience to remember!
