Sunken small yacht, Newton Creek IoW

I am too young to remember but was told that users of Newtown in the 1960s would ( or would not) make a donation toward ‘ light dues’ as with every other port of entry.

What you were paying for was the upkeep of the navigation buoys and channel. So effectively you paid once only upon entry.

Before my boat owning days.

How long has the NT been administering Newtown?

EDIT: This thread covers it:
A Document for Those who get charged tp Anchor
In my notes I have 2006 as the date from which the NT stopped charging for anchoring. Prior to that ie 2005 we were charged £5 for a 28ft boat, there was also a 50% discount for NT members. I still pay £5 per night if asked, I guess I should up that amount a bit (but probably not by the full amount of appreciation).

We were up there today. According to local sources, a thickening of the plot has occurred. It’s been reported that the sinking was in fact a deliberate scuttling. We’ll see on that, not sure I believe it. The wreck is being recovered in the next couple of weeks, and police will attend. The thought is that it was an attack by the fibreglass boring beetle, Makita Major. Clearly, once it’s recovered that will be easy to see. Regardless, it’ll be gone. What the guy will do then I don’t know, he is moored to the wreck, not to an anchor, I am told.

I suggested this two weeks ago in post #155 but the idea was not accepted.

Nobody thinks it’s anything but self inflicted, whether deliberate or not. Charges? Fly tipping? As has been said, it’s a difficult one. We all know ypu can’t just sink your boat where you like, but not sure what law that would break.
Knowing the boat was deliberately scuttled is one thing, proving it is another, if the guilty party is just a little bit smart. Obviously, signs of Makita major at work would do it, but there are more subtle ways of sinking a boat. On something that's old enough to be scuttled, a good wack on a seacock could well do it. Was it wacked, or did it just break?

I can't see anyone investing much in advanced forensics on that one. Even if you can prove it, then what? Fine him? I doubt very much he's got the means to pay. Put him in jail? Then you've got to do something with his boat.

I suspect that the easiest solution for everyone locally would be for the NT to dispose of the wreck, and for Matey to be persuaded to go somewhere where he's someone else's problem.

Merchant Shipping Act 1970 (Unregistered Ships) Regulations 1991 (SI 1991/1366) Reg 4 applies to leaisure yachts. In which case scuttling your own boat would be a criminal offence leading potentially to two years imprisonment.

Looking at his ‘new’ boat, HMP Wormwood Scrubs would be a considerable advance in living standards, across the board.

we were there last weekend, his "new boat" is quite a sight, not a pleasant one though.
On the plus side, there’s a large family of friendly seals. We were gently pursued by one yesterday, in our tender. For the sake of clarity, and to pre empt internet smartarses, that’s us in the tender, not the seal🤣

So are you saying that the one in the tender with the big long whiskers is actually your wife?
You are pushing your luck mate
