My Douglas Gill Ocean suit has seen better days and lets water in, my budget suits from XM and Lidl died quite quickly so now I need something that keeps the water out. I don't have to sit in an open cockpit for hours so the top-of-the-range offshore stuff is inappropriate, just something that will keep the water out for the occasional foray out of the doghouse. Lightweight but reasonably long-lasting. Suggestions?

And any pointers on discounted sources would also be welcome. :)

My Guy Cotten stuff is still going strong after 20+ years of use.

There is a Guy Cotten factory shop for end of line articles at Trégunc, near Concarneau if ever you are in the area. I got an offshore suit for €100 and oilies ( a few years ago) for 10 euros.

My Decathlon suit that cost about £100 lasted me for 5 years and is still in use by a friend 3 years later.

Needs re-waterproofing every few months.

I borrowed a GC suit once for a passage on the Lord Nelson. A watch in the torrential rain didn't let a drop in. But it was yellow unlined PVC suitable for 19th century fishermen, only lacking the sou'wester! Frustratingly GC have an office in Liskeard a couple of miles from here but no retail outlet!

I also have a Decathlon set which appears just as sturdy as the Mustos and much cheaper, with a good high neck. The only problem with mine is the cut is a bit weird - I expect it to allow room for a woman's chest, but the roomier area rises up when I sit down so it feels like there is space for a single, central bowling ball at the base of the neck.

I very much doubt this happens with the men's version.

I would definitely definitely go try some stuff on. I did and I was surprised at how much it varied. I just couldn't get Musto or Gill salopettes to fit me - way too long in the body. Their arms came out far too short on the jackets as well... maybe I'm some kind of orangutan... in the end I got some Henri-Lloyd Hi-fit salopettes which fit just perfectly. I doubt there's much in it in terms of quality between the usual suspects so I bought purely by which was most comfortable.

Edit to add: Check for pockets. I like to wear my salopettes with a Rab primaloft smock underneath when it's cold but not wet as such and the Henri Lloyd salopettes have no handy pockets. I guess they assume you'll be wearing a jacket over the top.

I am very long in the body (I'm 6'4" but wear regular length trousers, SWMBO (5'7") and I don't adjust the car seat when changing driver.

It amazes me that a lot are made without hanging loops so the only thing you can hang them by is the braces and the legs end up across the floor.

I think they do that Guy Cotten stuff at Macsalvors in Penryn. The oyster fishermen at Mylor wear it, or something very similar.
