Suggestions for a boat

Swift 18 might be one to consider?
Good call. One of the few suggested so far where one person could launch and step the mast without too much hassle. Small inside obviously. I’ve always had a hankering for one as a second boat to be trailered off for sailing holidays on the Broads. 600kg so easy to tow legally behind non-4x4 vehicle.

Wonder how much a Red Fox would be? Though the mast is getting less manageable in terms of just plonking it there by hand. The same goes for any boat that has any reasonable accommodation of course.

Seems the Red Fox is very sought after. Like the proverbial rocking horse poo.

Yeah, always liked the look of Red Fox boats. Before their time perhaps, with the chined hull - maybe that’s why they’ve aged well and are sought after.

A lot of great boat suggestions, some of which are my favourites. Any of them could be a good choice in the right circumstances, but I don't think any of them meet all of the criteria set out in the first post, i.e. -

1. A small boat - 23ft ± 3.
2. Trailerable and easy to rig
3. Sleeping accommodation and head
4. lift keel
5. Outboard powered
6. Second hand and cheap
7. Single-handed mast stepping.

As I said before, I think it's the criteria that need reconsidering. Which of those requirements are the essential priorities, and which can be relaxed/eliminated.

They do come up but would fail the OP's number 6 comprehensively

There has been one of the Red Fox race versions (smaller cabin) parked near here for several years. On a trailer, I expect the (UK) owner could be persuaded to part with it.

Thought it might. The market becomes aware of what is really good, and it gets priced accordingly. The RF looks like a barrel of fun when sailing, and emphatically tick all the other boxes. Proving that trailer sailers can be done right, it just costs.

If a class of boats is cheap it's because nobody wants them. A Red Fox or a Shrimper might seem expensive, but that's only because they are popular. Then when you want to sell you can and get your money back. You might get a Blowfly 20 for a lot less but when it comes to sell you might as well apply a match

Quite honestly, without the OPs friends cars towing capability, their marital and offspring status, their size/agility, and their intended sailing plan (day, weekend, or cruising) and their real budget is hard to make any sensible suggestions
