Suggestion from a stinker

Lets all hope the weekends weather was just the start of a great season. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I noted a problem in the busy exit channels as sail and power are equally keen to find deeper clear waters and have a suggestion that is in both interests.

Power boats create an unacceptable wash at 10 knots
Almost acceptable at 8 knots
But I feel happier in busy channels at 6/7 knots

As I exited the harbour at 6/7 knots outside the speed restriction I was not able to get ahead of the sail craft under power as they are wash free up to 7 knots, this makes it incredible difficult to power up without sending wash toward one of the boats that have by now fanned out.

My suggestion

Why dont we sort ourselves out in the exit channels, if you see a power boat at 6/7 knots why not slow down and let them passed so they can open up outside the speed restriction where their wash will be out of the way ?



I recognise there are some power @@@@@ that will always smash us to bits with their wake, we also have to suffer the idiots but most of us try.
 
Any suggestion has to be worth considering. However I fear that those who might be prepared to try such a scheme would still be out numbered by selfish and ignorant individuals, both power and sail, who felt that they are the only ones with any right to use the sea.
 
It wasn't the stinkies we had an issue with this weekend ... it was a racing raggie ... a Flying Fifteen none the less ... No 3736 ... who shouted at me "it is about time you learnt to F***ing sail" ... fine, but I was on Starboard, he was windward boat, then gybed so he was on port ... clear water all around me and he didn't even acknowledge I was there- hence I stood on - seemed to have the attitude that he was racing so I should've kept clear ... fine - but this was 200yards West of West Pole - a main passage from the solent into Chi Harbour ... so ... FF3736, next time I will be calling HISC and lodging a formal protest.
 
No the boating bit is a chore.
The fun bit is tied up to a walkashore pontoon and waching the telly.
So the actual Boating bit (between one shore power lead and the next) needs to be over and done with ASAP
 
I know (I race dinghies from another local club) ... infact he shut up just after I asked if he wanted me to lodge a formal protest ... sail no .. 3736 ... it was also worth noting that he was in the latter half of the fleet /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif and I'd already come through the first half with no problems (little course alteration here and there so we both did ok - us under full sail, them with their kites up)

A lovely weekend on the Solent

A wonderful time had by all.

And you guys wonder why I would rather take up golf than sail there
 
As has been noted above, what is the big rush? Have you calculated how much extra time it will take you to get to wherever you want to go if you have to poodle along at 6 knots behind a raggie for a little while?

Reminds me of the classic case of cars overtaking me on the highway, only for me to catch them up a few minutes later at the traffic lights further down the road......

If the stinker is allowed to pass at 7 knts in the channel, there will be no wash.

I kept at 7knts holding station as you put it Auldshot for 3/4 mile out side the restricted zone but as the sail craft were still at 7 knts it didnt gain anything, if they had slowed to 4/5 I would have been passed and away so every one is happy.

I slow from 25 knts to 6/7, all I am asking is for slower craft to slow from 7 to 4/5 so we can get out of the way with out causing wash, I thought it was a bright idea /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
I can see your point, but I think the flaw is that if there are so many boats around that you can't get far enough away from them to make your wash a non-issue, then if a sailing boat slows down, there'll be another mobo up it's chuff anyhow, so it won't make a difference.
 
I had the pleasure of one of the lasers on Sunday passing so closely that his boom nearly struck my backstay on a downwind reach. He heeled his tub so that his boom didn't strike my stern. There was lots of room, I was on a steady course (not towards his sacred yellow marker buoy) and he was the windward boat. I wouldn't normally be bothered other than it causing undue concern for my 5 year old daughter who I was introducing to the "pleasures of sailing in Chichester". SWMBO summed it up nicely by observing that it is a shame you get plonkers out on the water just like you do on the road !
 
In fairness Arfa, we all knew there was a big junior championships on in HISC over the weekend. I couldn't sail because I have a broken shoulder but if we had we would have tried to be away from Chi ASAP.
 
As it happened the wind was almost North so the dinghies were beating out in a straight line, But it amazes me that some boats Tack out against the tide and still expect everyone to get out of the way /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
The speed restriction ends at Eastoke Point but we can seldom open up until half a mile or even a mile past the Bar Beacon.

And I had no idea about the Races outside the Harbour.

The speed limit well may end at Eastoke but the channel is a real headache for anything with a draft, furthermore it is a place where a lot of skippers get rather nervous, so even if there is no bylaw, one would suggest that keeping one's speed down until beyond the beacon is the only decent thing to do.
 
Judders - you're preaching to the converted ... DAKA (bless his smoking exhausts) is one of the friendlier Mobos - usually slowing down to enter and exit the harbour ... actually all he is trying to do is get a good look at some of the totty on the saily boats ... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
 
Bloke concerned was mid 30's and not involved in a junior regatta unless he was blagging it - pretty unnecessary really. Yes, there were races on over the weekend and yes I was well away from any racing line (headed up to Northney away from their course). If all Chi users are supposed to abandon their plans for the weekend then do let me know.

There are situations when it is easier to give way in an unrestricted speed zone /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
