Suez Canal Transit Costs

A friend of mine has done at least 3 delivery trips through the canal recently in boat of a simulate size and he reckons the total, bottom line cost is around 2,500 USD.

This is including Shelter Bay marina – not cheap!!, agents, lines and fenders etc

Edit - the above costs are for Mono hulls

The OP is enquiring about Suez, Shelter Bay's at Panama.

We have just transited the Suez (1st - 6th Nov) with 2 other yachts and prior to us the Vasco Da Gamma Rally went through with 15 Yachts.

Okay so here we go:

Suez Canal Authority Fees - these are subject to the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) tonnage measurement. They carry out a calculation in theory based on the below formula:

SCA Tonnage = (L x (0.5 x G + 0.5 x B)Sq) x 0.17 or 0.18 / 100 or 2.83.

L= Length Over All
G= Girth (girth of vessel at the greatest breadth in a direction perpendicular to the keel from the upper deck on one side, to the upper deck on the other side by passing a chain under the keel)
B= maximum beam
sq= squared
0.17 used for wooden boats, 0.18 for steel (note no figure for GRP)
100 for measurements in feet, 2.83 for measurements in metres.

Our yacht is an Oyster 435 (L= 13.22, B= 4.12, G=7.83 metre, assume Steel and measure in metres).

The calculation came out to approx 30.4 ton (SCA).

You pay 9$ per ton therefore should be 273$.

The SCA measurer measured the size of our saloon, engine compartment and aft cabin. We were quoted and paid 370$.

You need also Visa, port clearance etc. Best to use an agent, we used Felix. Summary of costs:

Agency Fees - 100$
Port Clearance - 40$
Visa - 25$ per person
Expenses - 15$ per person
Port Fuad Yacht Club Fees - 21$ per night.
Ismailia Yacht Club Fees - 21$ per Night.
Port Suez Yacht Club Fees - 21$ per night
SCA Fees - 370$

Total - 716$ (2 persons, 2 nights at each location)

Plus Bakshee, some for agent at each location, some for the SCA measurer, some for pilots, some for little man who helped to take your ropes when mooring etc etc. Add another 150$.

The SCA fee covers a return trip as long as you return within 6 month. You will still have all the others to pay again.

Hope that gives you some idea. But do not use it as gospel. It can change depending on day, time of day, weather and how much Bakshee you throw around especially to the measurer and the agents reps.

Any reason you paid in US dollars? I assume you a Brit so why not Sterling?

Not an idle question. I may transit to Red Sea if and when I make my mind up which direction I will leave Greece next year.

Did you pay by card or cash.

In Egypt everything to do with the canal, marina's etc is done in US$. General shopping etc is in Egyptian Pounds (EGP).

Odd as it may seem and bear in mind I haven't been through since 1988 so things may have changed, but soap was a wonderful bartering tool.

Good quality soap was (is?) in short supply and was fabulously received...

Thanks for that info, miyagimoon, exactly what I was hoping for!

My Pleasure.

Have to say there was no real hassle and so far Egypt has been brilliant.

200$ per month for Hurghada Marina, water & elec extra. Diesel 1.25$/litre. Shopping is good and dirt cheap.

Only a fool would go beyond Eritrea.

There is still a lot to see. Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Sudan and Eritrea. This snorkelling and diving is unreal.

Diving Red Sea from my own boat is on my Bucket list and I would like to to head that way after leaving Greece & Turkey but after crossing off Syria, Lebanon & Israel from the proposed route because of security issues I'm not so sure. Hope things settle down in the next 12 months. :(

It's now ticked off my Bucket List, but diving the Thistlegorm is still on. But not for much longer!!!

There may be some unrest in Cairo but you would not know that in Port Said, the Suez (Ismailia & Port Suez) and here in Hurghada. As for visiting Israel that can be done via the Gulf of Aqaba (along with Aqaba, Jordan) without any real issues. From there you can visit Jerusalem and Petra.
